“Newsom, who recently said Democrats’ stance on including transgender kids in sports was “deeply unfair” and has invited far-right figures onto his podcast, said he hasn’t been part of any such discussions.
“I mean, to the extent that I’m marginally part of this party, I represent the state larger than 21 state populations combined, and I can assure you there’s not been a party discussion that I’m aware of that has included the state of California,” he told The Hill.“
That Al Gore sure has no idea of what the important issues are for the country.
Newsom - who isn’t even a democrat in spite of having run as one for decades- knows the danger trans women pose to our very existence!
It feels dirty to say this, but if you gotta elect one, JB seems like a good bet.
He’s been phenomenal for our state. He’s even actively tried to reform some of our worse laws and got many of them changed, although sadly our GOP beat him on the tax reform with flat out lies.
I’m sure someone more articulate could come up with a list of all the great stuff he’s done. Two things that come to mind is how much he does for downstate, despite the constant, active hate they give him. 9.5 million of our 12.5 million live in Chicago and the collar counties - more or less within about 1.5 hour from Lakeshore Drive (it would take about 7 hours to drive north to south in our state, so there’s a LOT of farmland). There’s entire counties downstate that have population less than a city block in Chicago and he keeps setting up ways to help them. The main campaign item the GOP ran against him last election was “he’s fat”, because his policies have been right on. He’s done what he campaigned to do. The marijuana legalization (which included first-in-the-US automatic pardon and purge of records) was game changing.
He’s been a vocal opponent of Trump since COVID. That’s the other thing that sold me on him (I voted for his primary opponent, two terms ago) - after Trump literally confiscated our PPE, this guy worked out a secret multimillion dollar PPE deal, to be conducted in a McDonald’s parking lot, to ensure our first responders had some gear. He gets stuff done.
I honestly want him to stay. Despite all the madness at the fed level, my local government and state government thankfully have functioning brains.
Yeah, I get that, but I honestly don’t care. Nothing against him… but people with wealth and power need to back people for office who do not come from that background and in that way help reverse the damage that their class has done to the rest of us. This is why I think our best bet is Walz-AOC, both of whom come from working class backgrounds and actually understand what it’s like to struggle in one way or another. Pritzker, for all his good intentions, just doesn’t.
He seems like a great guy and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the guy and I’m sure he means well. But that doesn’t mean that his class status isn’t going to shape his campaign and his policies. Just look at what happened with Fetterman, who likewise came from a privileged background.
I think it’s time for people of his class to sit down and shut the fuck up and let the rest of us into positions, including the presidency, where we can actually build a society that works for all of us, not just for the wealthy few.
There’s that, too. He seems to be doing a great job in Illinois, so maybe that’s where he can do the most good.
Anyway, YMMV… obvious if he’s the nominee, I’ll vote for the guy, but I prefer it not be someone who comes from privilege.
At this point, most candidates need to prove themselves to me, with actions as well as words. So yeah, he may be talking a good game now, enough for me to keep an eye on him, but I’ll wait to fully commit.
On the plus side, Abdul El-Sayed is running for Senate in Michigan. I liked him when he was running for governor (he lost the primary to Whitmer), so this is good news. And there are two (so far) primary challengers for my congressional representative shitweasel, so I’ll be watching that race very closely.
Sadly, she’s been in office long enough that she will receive lifetime government benefits and a pension better than any of her constituents. Probably more than some counties, collectively.
True, but if she runs for Senate, she will lose, as there is enough republicans in the state who will withhold their vote, or vote for a libertarian candidate, or even vote for Ossoff, than vote for a MAGA extremist like her. If Kemp were running, I’d be worried, but if it’s her, she’ll lose and then she’ll be out of office, because she can’t run for both at the same time.
He came in second in Tuesday’s primary, winning 12.91% of the vote behind Mayor Aftab Pureval’s 82.53%. The two beat a third candidate, Republican Brian Frank, to advance to the general election this fall.
Locally, the small city Democratic party has been putting a lot of effort into these hyper local elections. Like leaving endorsement cards and stuff. It seems to be working. Our city seems mostly progressive and having that endorsement takes a lot of the effort out of non-partisan elections.
I always find as much info on candidates as I can. But it’s hard for things like the school board!
