“I think Elon Musk should be expelled from the British Royal Society,” the Nobel laureate and AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton wrote on X. “Not because he peddles conspiracy theories and makes Nazi salutes, but because of the huge damage he is doing to scientific institutions in the US. Now let’s see if he really believes in free speech.”

So if he were spreading conspiracy theories and making Nazi salutes, but not doing damage to scientific institutions, that would be fine? Aren’t the conspiracy nazi shit part of HOW he’s damaging scientific institutions?

Other scientists who have voiced support for Musk have argued that, despite his actions being reprehensible, Musk has made huge contributions to engineering.

And what contributions did Leon personally make? He is a businessman. Any “engineering” was surely done by his employees.

Yep, that too. He’s a businessman (and a bad one at that) not a scientist…

I used to pay 2-3 daily visits to the USGS (the geology and seismology department) world earthquake monitor page. It’s an interactive world map w/click on-able dots where quakes have happened. So cool, useful, and helpful.

It horrifies me to report that the Gulf of Mexico on said map has been changed to gulf of america…and I don’t plan on visiting again until it’s gone back to the real name.

South Africa on Friday rejected a claim by multibillionaire Elon Musk that his Starlink satellite company could not operate in the country because he is not Black, and its telecoms regulator said Starlink had not applied for a licence.

And the number of federal employees has been steadily going down, relative to the size of the US population, since like the '60s.

Yeah, it’s two very much overlapping reasons to expel him - along with the fact that he never should have been admitted in the first place.

Also… “Some in the scientific community are adamant science should not be politicised, and have argued revoking Musk’s fellowship could undermine trust in science”… WTF? Yes, it would undermine trust in science to eject the guy… undermining trust in science. (And if ejecting a Nazi is “political” and people claim it undermines their trust in science, those people never really trusted science in the first place.)
