I’m sorry about your friends’ problem car, that stinks. I won’t say the model doesn’t have its quirks, because it does (all cars do. My first car had a fuel light that would go on if I hit a bump, even on a full tank.) Electrical system issues can be a thing with Cruisers, according to the Consumer Reports book I carried with me on the car search when I bought mine. 
(Overall, the years’ make I wound up buying had a good rating, and I got it from a closing dealership, so I got a good deal.)
