Richest man in the world somehow can’t afford to shell out for either actual bronze or a talented artist, even for the arrogant inflation of his own ego.

I wasn’t sure if it was something he shelled out for. It says it’s by ElonRWA, right? So here’s the deal with that as far as I could figure out, because it’s so much of whatever it is. See, the statue doesn’t look anything like Musk because it’s not supposed to look like Musk, it’s supposed to look like this drawing of him from reddit, which became a meme at least among Musk fans:

Elon Musk by watchieboy

So some crypto guy decided to make it into an NFT – only to go further it’s the first ever Real World Asset, meaning they bought the original drawing and the tokens are supposed to give you partial ownership of that in what I’m sure must be some very meaningful legal sense. And then some “decentralized autonomous agency” called FeistyDAO is trying to promote the asset by raising awareness of the meme. So they made a giant mural of it that says “Occupy Mars”, and they made this statue, and I guess now they’re trying to make a meme museum.

So yeah. That’s where we are now. Welcome to the future, hold onto your socks.

It’s funny how often these days I hear about something like this and instead of feeling confused or left out because I never heard about any of this, I just think “Thank fuck I didn’t know anything about that”.

In retrospect it makes a kind of sense. People have speculated on art for a long time. But who decides the value of art? The historian who knows its cultural significance? The critic who can tell its skill? The art lover with a soul that can be moved by its beauty? Ha ha of course not, none of that is anything these nihilistic bros can grasp. The only value is numbers going up and everything else in life is just a joke, the uglier the better, so here we have an ugly joke taking the place of art to go with tokens taking the place of investment.

Of course there’s some bizarre terminally-online incel crypto meme bullshit involved. Of course.

I used to worry I was getting old and would never keep up, now it’s just a wonderfully freeing feeling.

At least they own something.

But - late to that game of fractional art ownership.

MIxed messaging with the sartorial choices there.

And with the proportions.

Props to the sculptor who is clearing telling us that having a really big head tends to affect choices. Like, y’know, what clothes to wear outside your own home. Or which… magic wand… to grab before getting out the door… as one does… surely…

(link provided for English as a second language speakers who may not be aware of the slang meaning of “big head”)

I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.

The pattern, for those that don’t want to read through the whole thing, is not actually explicitly stated but it’s this: it’s a promise that Musk makes. None of it’s true.
