In his book the Drowned and the Saved, Primo Levi talks about a Rabbi in Warsaw (I think it was) who did all he could to accommodate the Nazis in the hopes that it would save his local community. That particular essay ends as you would expect, with the Rabbi going to the death camps at the end…

I cannot bring myself to care about Musk doing a Nazi salute, or Trump refusing to put his hand on a Bible as he’s sworn in. There was a point where this sort of thing would have been a huge red flag, a significant warning sign to be heeded, but we’re years past that now. We all know these fuckers are Nazi scum by now, and all their cute little coded messages and “accidental” gestures are such childish small change compared to the actual damage they’re about to do, I can’t waste the mental bandwidth on it. It would be like getting outraged every time a Nazi in 1940s Germany saluted. Yeah, they’re Nazis, they do that, what else were you expecting? Save your energy for kicking their asses, says I.

It’s shitty, because this stuff energizes the Nazis in the U.S. and exhausts the rest of us (or me, at least). It’s still important they get called out for it. There needs to be push-back against all of the shit: policy, hateful messaging, dog whistles, and overt symbols of allegiance with fascists.
