Fall of the Fourth Estate: A Critique of Mass Media

I agree. Let the NYT burn.

lots of turnout for Hands Off! rallies all over south florida.
we attended the one here in Key Largo. one woman wondered aloud, “think we’ll make the news?”
“i don’t think the media is covering this”. came the response.
we shall see, but this was a big day with over 1200 events planned nationwide.
more locally, the Conch Republic was represented here in KL, also Marathon and Key West. that’s something for a decidedly red Monroe County.

Looking good!!!

(Unfortunately, I scheduled an internet upgrade for today [still waiting] several weeks ago. But will go to Bernie’s rally next Saturday.)

Also, I received your latest postcard—or at least my neighbor around the corner received it and then hand delivered it to me.

I recognize that Jefe!

Like I tell the daughter with tattoos: cover up your distinguishing characteristics if there’s any chance of being doxxed at the time or later. (Which I said after noticing her in a cover photo for a story in MAGA media, wearing a mask but with arms bare and thus highly identifiable.)

advice well appreciated.

the other side of that sign says “hands off disability/ social security”. my “distinguishing feature” is the whole part of that. the only time my prosthetic is covered is formal occasions or jury duty. so, yes, where i am i am very recognized and i wanted to be visible.
besides, island life is short pants life!

I don’t know about the print version, but the Kansas City Star covered the protests here on their Facebook page.

“ Pro-life influencer Savannah Craven Antao was interviewing an unidentified woman in the Thursday clip when the woman punched her twice before walking off.

“You just don’t understand the magnitude of having a child,” the interviewee said during the chat that went way off the rails.

“Well, I’m not the one who admitted they would be okay with killing babies in foster care and killing children that have been abused,” Antao replied.

“That’s not the point! What I’m saying,” the woman said before she dropped her point and then threw her fists, knocking Antao to the ground.”

Them’s fighting words!

Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, 315 U.S. 568 (1942)

“Writing for a unanimous Court, Murphy identified certain categorical exceptions to First Amendment protections. These included obscenities, certain profane and slanderous speech, and “fighting words.””

No NY Times/Pravda, I refuse to “forget Signal Chat.”

No surprise either that I have to scroll down about 4 screens worth to get to what’s only a small mention of yesterday’s protests.

I refuse to forget the Signal chat, but honestly, the whole “killing civilians in the Middle East with no actual strategy behind it is just something we gotta do” is disgusting too.

If they aren’t disruptive, covering them would distract from important insider gossip.

If they are disruptive, covering them would be irresponsible.

Which seems like it’s been bipartisan US policy since I’ve been able to vote

And the worst part is that doesn’t even give me an idea how old you are. But I do remember there being people in the media who criticized the idea. When Bush launched his invasion of Iraq, there were a lot of voices saying it would be a disaster that got sidelined in favor of assholes who supported it. Now somehow it’s accepted that might not have been the best, and yet all the assholes are still there, having learned exactly nothing.

I think Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. is actually even worse. He’s the guy behind the August 2021 Kabul drone strike targeting civilians, who recommended nobody face consequences for it. Why the hell should anyone care what he thinks is a “necessary blow”? Wow, a guy who murdered civilians thinks murdering more civilians is awesome, better make sure everyone knows his insightful take. :unamused:

not knowing your years, surely you are referring to Bush Sr.'s invasion of Iraq in the 90s, yes?

Well, no, I know about the war but I’ve never heard it named an invasion, even though they pushed into Iraqi territory at the end. And that one actually had the UN involved and some kind of real objective for them to achieve so I wouldn’t quite consider it the quite same thing.

Oh, so still no admission of the 2017 tax hike on most of the middle class via elimination of most of the most common deductions? I certainly noticed my Federal taxes going up nearly $4k a year.
