Coverage of yesterday’s Rage Against the Regime protests:
The media covers the regime far more than the opposition, downplays when the turnout is high, and mostly reports about protest plans on the day of the protest (instead of in advance).
There’s a thought that sunlight is the best disinfectant, that by exposing fascists as fascists and Nazis as Nazis, it will raise awareness of the truth of what they are, and thus will turn people away from them. This seems to hold a certain logic, but my problem with it is that by any reasonable metric we have been testing the theory out to the maximal degree for at least the last decade, and the exact opposite effect has happened. I think we have to assume that actually sunlight has a normalizing effect. I think promoting events where either proposition can win is a really great way to let people win who have ideas that should never be considered, and to introduce the idea that such ideas might, could, or even should win.
The problem is that we haven’t just been shining sunlight on these fascists. We’ve been shining sunlight on them, while putting them on stage and handing them a microphone, and then distributing their message to hundreds of millions of people via the internet. You can put sunlight on them without platforming them.
We need to think of it more like a spotlight, blinding them while making them easy to see, rather than a warm, positive beam of sunlight.
I don’t know what cinemablend is, but I’m sure as shit not gonna read it now…
