Arbitrarily, basically. (Presumably based on age in this case, determined to be the legal penalty that will make people less likely to cut down heritage trees.) It was 100 years old, so it’s not like they can replace it with something remotely similar. (Transplanting mature trees requires special equipment to dig up as much of the roots as possible, with earth, and even so will take years of constant care to recover from the damage done. The older the tree, the less likely it is to survive the damage, plus trees grow to fit their environment, so the older the tree, the less likely it’ll survive somewhere different.) Basically, if it gets replaced, it’ll be a sapling that’ll take decades to be a real replacement.

Carruthers and Graham were once good friends, the jury was told, but not now. “That once close friendship has seemingly completely unravelled, perhaps as the public revulsion at their behaviour became clear to them,” Wright said. He said each man may now be trying to blame the other.

I’m glad that they’re realising that they may just be the most hated people in Britain. The revulsion goes across party and class lines

I’ll never understand legalese. Mindless, IMO is something done without any thought. These MFers planned that shit.

 I hope there’s a way to calculate an equivalent of 100 years of effort and apply that to their sentences, if they are found to be guilty. This isn’t just about money. Maybe the court could find some menial task related to maintaining forests or trees and have them spend most of their days doing just that.

Purely speculation, but the first thought to pop into my head was “I wonder how good they are at scrubbing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and returning oxygen?”

As a quick-and-dirty estimate of the number of disabled people, vs. the number of disabled people receiving disability benefits:

There are about 204,000,000 working age adults. During major wars, conscript forces would usually exempt about 20% of the population for obvious disabilities. So you would have well over 40,000,000 disabled working-age adults. As of 2020, 9,700,000 of them have ssdi; as of 2019, 4,646,559 of them have ssi. At least 25,000,000 Americans are disabled working-age adults, are not receiving disability benefits, and would be subject to work requirements for healthcare.

But sure, it’s a common-sense policy. It’s one that makes poor people’s survival depend, more and more, on being useful to the rich oligarchs who run this country.

This is entirely the wrong approach.
What you do is to declare yourself pope and denounce the guy in Rome as the anti-pope.

Ah, a traditionalist.

This is obviously the result of an experiment gone wrong at CERN.

A Pope-Antipope pair are created in the LHC by a collision of two major cat(holic)ions. They are then accelerated in opposite directions, one ending up at Avingon and one at Rome. They travel so far without being affected by ordinary matter because of their interaction with the Higgs field, resulting in a widespread uncertainty about the correct mass.

And the whole kerfuffle ended up with having three popes simultaneously, each one denouncing the two others.

I see what you did there.
