Anne Wheaton posted this on Bluesky:

I was taking a social media break but my silence has worried some due to the fires in our area. We’re safe and so are our pets and our home. No fires by us, just lots of trees down, and the wind decided to put our side gate on our neighbors’ front yard. :flushed:

That last sentence, in context with the rest of the post is kind of heartbreaking.

A D.C. Superior Court judge on Jan. 10 sentenced a 16-year-old male to a year of probation after he pleaded guilty to a single charge of simple assault related to the Oct. 27 incident in which police said as many as 15 people attacked a gay man at the D.C. McDonald’s restaurant at 14th and U Streets, N.W., with some of the attackers shouting anti-gay slurs.

That’s what happened in Portland with White Aryan Resistance (Tom Metzger’s group) in the late 80s/early 90s. The family of Mulagetta Seraw and the Southern Poverty Law Center sued him and they, indeed, bankrupted the bastard. He never fully recovered from it financially.

and that is a good thing.
didn’t SPLC also bankrupt the klan for a spell? not sure if that abominable outfit is nearly as strong as it once was, but i know that they are not gone completely.

I’m always up for a trip to the SPLC website:

Through a series of court cases aimed at bankrupting the Klan and closing the group’s paramilitary training camps, the organization has been weakened. Internal fighting and government infiltrations have led to an endless series of splits, resulting in smaller, less organized Klan chapters. Given the Klan’s insistence on remaining an “invisible empire,” it is nearly impossible to estimate how many active members there are today. However, it is fair to assume that the infighting, rigid traditions and the uncouth image of the Klan are not attracting significant new membership.

And here is their map of active groups:

0 in Louisiana and Mississippi? Surprising.

I was surprised about the number of zeroes all over. Still not enough, of course, but it’s progress on one front, at least.

No KKK, I suppose, but similar groups with different names.

Well that’s the thing really. All sorts of organized, ready to kill white supremacist groups are active, probably in every state, some with former KKK members. Same shit, different day, etc.

We’re the Klan of Ku Klux, not the Ku Klux Klan!
