Read that and thought, “That sounds familiar. To the library!” And what should i find on my shelf?

From back in my Sci-Fi Book Club days (so, late 70s-early 80s) Time for a re-read!

Racial hatred reared its head in Texas flash floods with a former Houston mayoral appointee lamenting that Camp Mystic tragedy was highlighted as it was “white-only” and “Christian”.

Not sure that site deserves a click, and I regret giving it mine.

I don’t think it’s “racial hatred” to point out that the camp’s demographic trends so very very white, nor that the media pays less attention to missing girls who aren’t white.

That site clearly promotes the racist narrative that pointing out anything that’s typically white about white people’s actions is racist.

Agree. Characterizing Perkins’ comments as “racist” is pretty remarkably telling, I would have to say.

Well you know, the only reason she’d say such insane things is because she’s crazed by a totally delusional hatred for white people!!

Like @Millie_Fink, I don’t like the way this outlet framed things. Sade Perkins is correct. Camp Mystic is a very white summer camp for upper class Christian girls. In 2011, over a decade ago, it cost over $4,000 for a month. In addition, the camp had no issue appropriating Native American ideas for their white traditions too. You can see photos of them in their “tribal” head gear.

The tragedy of the flood is getting more attention because most of the children who died, and the living ones now traumatized, are the white Christian daughters of wealthy families. It isn’t racist to mention that or be upset about it. And being upset doesn’t negate how awful the deaths are or the grief and trauma of the survivors and families.

Edit to say most of the dead kids are white upper class. We haven’t heard hardly anything about the other dead children. And there are others.

It looks like the kind of camp that Wednesday Addams should visit.

I have a divorced friend who is a doctor who worked at a couple of privileged summer camps when her son was young as a way to give herself a working holiday and him an experience he wouldn’t otherwise get.

I visited a few times during drop off/pickup days, and noticed that the girls’ side had a number of Asian campers, but the parents were white. In other words, transracial international adoptees, usually from China. Very common.

But this camp doesn’t even have that. I have literally never seen so many northern European heritage white girls alone together, and I’ve spent significant time in Nordic, Germanic, and Celtic countries.

This is very, very hard to accomplish. No wonder they’re worried about losing such an important training camp.

I’ve been to Kerrville. Very beautiful area, not quite a small town but definitely not a city. It’s very green, quiet, quaint, and there’s also an apparent wealth gap. People that are living very humbly share the town with very well off folks.
