Fucks sake. They advertised those little cretins during the Superb Owl?? I hope theres some serious backlash from all the fuckwits who voted for this shit when they turn up for work one day, and find the Man From INCEL is already rooting through their desks looking for incriminating evidence.
The LOTR movies on their own merit are great, and an achievement of filmmaking/art. As adaptations of the books i’m more mixed as i thought the first movie is a near perfect adaptation, 2nd movie is like 80-70% there, and the last movie had some bigger changes that i found too distracting and my enjoyment dipped to like 50%. (And the Hobbit movies are terrible adaptations of the story). All my own personal opinion of course, i know of other folks that have read the books as much as i have that adore the movies.
That’s the frame of reference I viewed that post through.
I had similar misgivings about the movies initially. Over time, I’ve been able to view them as their own thing instead of trying to compare them to the books.
ETA:
I’m talking about LOTR above. I don’t enjoy the Hobbit movies at all.
So much heavy duty action happens so often, without any pause for breath between, I just began saying, “Oh, FFS!” every coupla minutes.
Not accurate, just illustrative:
The party is being chased by [insert terrifying thing] and they escape. Two minutes pass, and suddenly everyone’s bouncing down a mountain, just bouncing off the bare rock, with no protection. Now they’re at the base of the mountain, with no broken bones nor injuries, and they enter a deep, dark forest. Suddenly [something terrifying] is chasing them, and they somehow escape. Two minutes pass, and they’re suddenly chased by [something terrifying]. Repeat ad infinitum.
I have a harder time switching that part of my brain off, and its not like i’m trying to do it on purpose so watching the movie and picking up on the differences ends up being either too distracting or irritating. Which is why i try to watch a movie first and then read the source material if possible, it’s way more enjoyable for me that way.
I think some of the changes in Return of the King took away from the actual story though. Notably that Pelennor Fields was won entirely by an invincible flood of ghosts, taking away the heroism of the people involved. I found the less over-the-top action in the others more interesting too. I do still think it’s a great movie, but there are things like that where spectacle came before substance that point the way to the absolute train wreck of the prequels.
I can’t remember whether I read A Clockwork Orange before or after seeing the film, but I’ve “heard” Mr McDowell narrate every subsequent reading.
They were great movies. My inconsistency with the books that was difficult for me was the Witch King shattering Gandalf’s staff. After establishing in the previous movie that the only one more powerful in Middle Earth was Sauron.
Still - loved them. Bought the extended versions.
A mushroom not the the jellyfish.
Still not going to drink it though.
