There appears to be some sort of glitch that’s dropping my characters’ dearly-won stat points-- my Lyrica’s lost a thousand from both Attack and HP. It may or may not have something to do with the Snow War event that just started, since we were told points would be fixed-- but that isn’t the same as losing points. And this isn’t the first time I’ve noticed points fluctuating, either. Grrrrrrrr. We’ll see what the developer says; I’ve emailed them with a query. I love this game, but it’s awfully buggy sometimes.
Fortnite’s Winter Event is good, actually. I’ve played about 20 hours of Team Rumble - and reached level 35. (Team Rumble is 20v20 team death match). So if big dumb shooters is your genre of choice, check out this week on fortnite.
Well, visual novels could offer interesting stories without fancy graphics, timing, or coordination challenges. And sometimes they do. But usually not.
I’ve been delivering trailers full of gifts in American Truck Simulator’s holiday event, and completed my 12th delivery in New Mexico tonight (so I get the achievement and holiday paintjob). I don’t really know what the point of it is, but after the pre-holiday stress, and the cold and snowstorms, it’s a good time to relax, listen to music, and coast through the nice warm desert on cruise control.
I never heard back from the developer, but an update went out that appears to have fixed the points-loss issue, so that’s something. I took a couple of days off around the holiday, but I’m back to playing, at least enough to fulfill Daily Quests.
Each day, characters are given three to five semi-random goals to accomplish, with a reward of crystals; complete all the goals, and you receive 150-250 crystals, depending on how many things you needed to accomplish. Whether done or not, the Quests reset at midnight. I left it a little late tonight, and had to get my melee tank through 15 rounds in the Arena in about 25 minutes. It’s not impossible, but it’s a little tricky. I did my best to speed through the bouts, and as a result I think I was playing more aggressively than usual. I might have lost three or four out of 15 (not bad at all in Diamond League, the second-highest tier.) And then, at the conclusion of the last match, which I won, this happened:
I can’t explain how I managed to rank so high, either; the two Champion players I beat along the way were a lot lower (2702 and 2596.) But I’m sure going to enjoy this while it lasts… until midnight tomorrow night, when the Arena resets and it starts all over again. I really didn’t think this was going to happen this soon, but given his strong Attack and Defense, it’s not surprising the tank was the first to achieve this. (I thought my ranged mage Lyrica might be first, but her run-and-gun strategy failed in 4 out of 10 matches tonight. Either my opponents have finally figured out how to counter, or I need to work on her stats again. Probably both. )
I haven’t tried it yet, I got sucked back into World of Tanks, so I’ve been doing that most nights. But that video popped up and reminded me of how much fun I had with MechWarrior IV. I used to play it so much, long after it was a thing.
My favorite thing to do was take a light mech and just run circles around the enemy. Pretty much everyone wanted the biggest, most heavily-armed assault mechs. One alpha strike from them would destroy me, but they could almost never get a bead on me, while I was running around blasting away, wearing them down.
I spent most of the early-game MW5 running around in a Firestarter, even after the rest of my lance were in heavies. They’re great for demolition missions (just sprint through the city/base while strafing the buildings with flamers and machine guns), and also handy for shutting down big mechs while you order your teammates to pound them.
Got 2 months free access to Origin Access so played Vampyr - I have to say, that’s one of those solid 7/10 games that I really enjoy. Some gameplay issues that stop it from being a great game, but held high with an incredible atmosphere, a solid story and some masterful voice acting.
It actually really struck me as being akin to the first Witcher game - it knows exactly what it’s trying to be and while not always successful, it carves its own space and you can clearly see that it could build into something really good if they make a sequel.
I’ve heard the PS4 and Switch versions have some loading time issues, but it wasn’t really an issue on PC. Looks like the lowest it’s been is USD$16.99, but if it drops to $10 then I’d say jump on it.
Apologies to the person upthread who was complaining about being overwhelmed with interactive stories, but I took a chance on one and have I’ve been spending the last few hours playing “Detroit Becoming Human.”
The controls are very difficult, especially walking the avatar around the scene, but it’s surprisingly compelling. Maybe if I was using a controller instead of a keyboard, I would be having a better time. I’m still in the early chapters. The graphics are pretty stunning but I’m a sucker for near-future sci-fi so I’m finding the story pretty great, if maybe a little too intense at times. You play a variety of androids trying to cope in a world where some humans resent the ubiquity of artificial life, at the same time that some androids are deviating from their programming and putting people’s lives at risk.
If you had told me that I’d be playing games like this back in 1985, I wouldn’t have believed you.
I don’t know how accessible or enjoyable these may be:
I have a lot of fun with EU II when I was younger, never really got into EU III, got frustrated with the micromanagement and gave up in EU Rome. Any thoughts?
