If a fetus is a separate person, then the fetus has rights. But defining a fetus as a person calls into question countless legal issues. If a fetus is truly a person, then child support laws should go into effect at the start of a heartbeat. In that situation, the father would be legally be required to pay a percentage of his income in accordance with applicable state statutes. Fathers who failed to contribute to the unborn child’s welfare, would be prosecuted by the government. If a state elects to grant full personhood to a fetus, then parents should be able to claim a fetus on their taxes.

Parents now apply for a Social Security number for their child once they have a birth certificate; if personhood begins earlier than birth, a fetus will need a Social Security number to be claimed on taxes and to take advantage of public resources. Nearly three million pregnancies a year in the U.S. are unintended, meaning such a shift would require a massive expansion of social support systems, healthcare and education. Pregnant women, if legally separate from their fetus, also ought to be able to drive in the carpool lane throughout their pregnancy.

I wonder if this logic can be used to go after the anti-abortion laws…

Yes, exactly. Use their ammunition against them.

I read that as talking about his physical truck that the journalist wanted to go on a ride-along in.

Still a shitty, ridiculous position that’s entirely without support in his religion, though.

He repeated the line in many venues to the point where it’s more analogy than literal.

(why no one-box?)

No one box for probably the same reasons you can’t read the article without a subscription, including in incognito mode.

I’d love to have a sit-down with WaPo’s marketing team sometime.

Like the “religious freedom” laws. Tell a Christian they can’t come in your store cause you find them offensive. When they sue, just cite the law they wanted.

Thanks for the explanation!

I find I can read WaPo as long as I keep it to only a few (no idea the exact number) articles per month. I use Firefox, uBlock Origin, and Privacy Badger.

I used to be able to, but now the site seems to arbitrarily decide whether it not it wants to annoy a potential customer.

Honestly I don’t usually try anymore, but that article looked good.

ETA: now that I’m home and on the net through Pi-hole, the page seems to load fine on an incognito tab. Cool!

He could have brought his wife. He could have live-streamed the trip for video evidence of its propriety. He had options.

This is the part that gets me. So you have a rule about not being alone with a member of the opposite sex. Okay. Do you want your election bid covered or not?

And I think it’s pretty clear what the real answer to that is.

Here the Cinema Snob reviews a Pure Flix infomercial on this concept. It’s a film written by and starring a middle-aged creep who refuses to be in the same room with any woman he isn’t married to.

It’s called “Old Fashioned.” A film for people who have no knowledge of the recent or distant past.

Ye gods.

If he were really old fashioned and chivalrous, shouldn’t he at least let her wait in his shop, or ask his aunt if she could have his tenant in for a cup of coffee, or like anything besides leaving her on the balcony wrapped in a blanket?

And at least in that review, they are alone together all the time, just not indoors. Because rape never happens outdoors apparently.

His friends support Trump because he unilaterally recognised the capital of a foreign country which is not its actual capital???

Something he never campaigned on, either.

Reminds me of the German Jewish people who voted for Hitler because they liked his economic policies.

This is how Trump has managed to maintain the minority he’s got: there are all sorts of single-issue voters who will stand by him despite not liking him or agreeing with him on everything else.

Just because a sizeable number have racism as their single issue doesn’t mean there aren’t some Zionist voters as well.

They’re really going to have to decide between their racism and their sexism: the only religious sub-groups with a majority belief that abortion should not be legal are Latinx Catholics and Protestants. What’s a white supremacist to do?
