Gun Control

I think this upcoming weekend is supposed to be some kind of red letter day for these people. Stay safe, everyone, and kick against those pricks.

I guess gun nuts aren’t actually good for business.

Is that “tactical rifle” as opposed to “strategic” like the Paris Gun, or opposed to “not at all thought out,” like whatever he was doing with it? (P.S. or like what the German high command did with the Paris Gun…)

“Tactical” means accessorized.

I gather that some use “tactical" to mean something like masculine / tough looking / military fetishistic on the one side, or big / scary on the other side.

This observation comes from visiting gun shows for the cultural eduction and living in a rural area.

IIRC the assault weapons ban was derided to prohibiting “cosmetic” features of the weapons. and yet, judging by the popularity of “tactical pens” or “tactical flashlights”, cosmetic does not mean superficial. I suspect that many a gun used in mass shootings is chosen chiefly because
a) it looks cool
b) it has been proven successful in combat against “civilians.”

Wow. It’s not often that Sack makes actual political commentary.
That shows how serious the issue is.

ALICE: We should ban assault weapons.

BOB: There’s no such thing as an “assault weapon.” All semi-automatic firearms are the same.

ALICE: So you’re saying we should ban all semi-automatic firearms.

BOB: NO!!!

ALICE: Yeah I think that’s what you said. Sounds good to us.

I think there’s a temptation to try and reverse engineer which features made it easier for the gunman, Maybe there’s some difference between a rifle and a pistol.

Not particularly.

In fact, bringing up pistols goes into the bizzaroland that you can take a pistol, lengthen the barrel and add a stock and it is legal. You take a rifle and shorten the barrel and it is suddenly illegal. Even though - functionally - the two weapons may be the same.

My speculation revolved around

But of course the virgina tech shooter used handguns.

Concealability used to be an issue but can’t ARs break down into a bag? I don’t think it takes much time or skill to put one back together. People carry bags all the time, everywhere, except cities that have had a lot of terrorism but no multi-decade war zone shit. I think what’s going to happen, worldwide, is that we’ll all look with suspicion on people carrying things.

Clearly we’re really good at making dangerous devices smaller and smaller. It’s kind of what a lot of us did all the time before science became of much more use to our survival and education. Then weapons became industrial and truly apocalyptic and we all started saying, let’s stop making so much fucking weaponry.

P.S., that’s why cops freaked the fuck out over the 5-7 round getting into civilian hands. Concealable as a typical 9 mm but more like a assault rifle.

I had this one as a kid:

My dad must have thought it hilarious buying it for me for Christmas, given that he worked at the CIA at the time.

That’s quite a set.

But it needs a personal rocket-launching helicopter to be truly complete.
