GURPS Banestorm redux

A bit of Cardien history:

The first post-Banestorm immigrants to what is now Cardiel were a mix of Sunni and Shia tribesmen. After the Megalan crusades against al-Wazif began in the fifteenth century, they organised for self defence as the nation of al-Kard.

However, al-Kard was never as unified as al-Wazif or al-Haz, and it swiftly fell to Megalan conquest, beginning at Hadaton. After the conquest, the crusaders divided the country amongst themselves and began importing Catholic immigrants.

Many of the early lords treated their Muslim subjects harshly, provoking revolt. This, combined with the pressure of an occasional failed jihad from al-Haz, had a selective effect on the local lords. The tolerant ones who integrated with the local community thrived, while the harsher lords withered.

Eventually, these more tolerant lords came to dominate. Their subjects were more productive and less likely to assist the Hazi invaders. In return, these lords came to see their interests as being more aligned with the people of Cardiel than the Emperor in Megalos, and successfully declared independence in the late 18th century. However, the Megalans hung onto Hadaton for twenty years; it wasn’t conquered/liberated by the Cardiens until the early 19th century.

Cardien law has three unusual features. Firstly, religious tolerance is guaranteed. Secondly, slavery is illegal. Thirdly, execution by torture is banned (although “given to the Mages’ Guild for experimentation” is not…).

The country is divided into seven semi-autonomous regions, each ruled by a great Lord. The country overall is ruled by a Prince. This isn’t a hereditary title; the Prince is elected by the Lords. Election as Prince is a lifetime appointment, but any Prince who irritates the Lords too much won’t have a very long lifetime.

The previous ruler, Prince Micardene of Tredroy, died a year ago. The current ruler is Prince Crivelli of Hadaton.

As mentioned above, Hadaton was the first region of al-Kard to be conquered in the Megalan Crusades and the last bit to be liberated in the Cardien War of Independence. It is still the most Catholic and Megalan part of the country, where the usual Cardien tolerance isn’t quite as guaranteed as in other places.

Imagine Northern Ireland if it had been forcibly reunited with the Republic of Ireland, two hundred years previously. They’re loyal Cardiens these days, but culturally a bit distinct from the rest of the country.

Hadaton itself is a port city of about 50,000 people. Not a match for the 200,000 found in Tredroy, but substantial.

Is booking passage a matter of discussing terms with the captain of a cargo boat or are there passenger ships making the Tredroy-Hadaton trip on the regular like modern ferry services?

There are a few dedicated passenger ships for high-status travellers, but mostly it’s as it was when you left Tredroy: cargo ships squeezing in a few passengers as a bit of bonus income.

Seems like a market waiting for the right mind to fill it.

Ordinary people don’t travel that much. Apart from merchants, mercenaries and nobles, most folks pretty much stay where they were born.

Assuming that everyone is okay with being redecorated:

One roll for Eoin vs Disguise (treating the whole party as a single task for simplicity) at +3 (+3 because you aren’t impersonating anyone specific, +2 because you aren’t well known here, -2 for improvised tools) to see how convincing it turns out.

@William_George, @DaakSyde: I’ve made my way through the old thread, and thought the box the ring was found in might have anti-detection wards - hence the in-character prompt for Thwip or Ranar to remember it, if you agree.

Unfortunately, Thwip dumped that box after swallowing the ring.

BTW: how Disguise etc works.

If you run into someone who might penetrate the disguise, they roll vs their observation skills. To see through the disguise, they need to make their observation roll by a greater margin than you made your disguise roll.

Camouflage, Acting, Holdout, Smuggling etc work similarly; Observation, Search, Detect Lies etc are the opposing skills.

With Eoin’s disguise job, it would take a very perceptive search to recognise you.

However, just as Eoin got bonuses on his roll, so might the searchers. If someone were to grab you and examine you closely, for example, they would get a substantial bonus. Ditto if you ran into someone who knew you well.

It was implied; I hassled people to specifically tell me what they were taking, everything else was left behind.

So: now that you’re all dressed for the ball, what are you doing? Heading straight for the docks or something else? En masse, or split up?

What’s happening to the horse? It’s reasonably healthy, but still visibly carrying a wound.

Eoin/Hayu: feel free to toss in some narrative post chattage as you move around to the other side of town.

Assuming Thwip’s command/suggestion to split into two teams is taken: Given the disguise of the courier and the bodyguards I think it’d be wise to make a beeline for the docks to see what sailing options there are. Our customer is waiting for their fancy whatevers after all.

Then maybe we can agree to meet up at the docks. Or the inn if nothing is sailing out that day.

Umm… About that… I have a response to Eoin’s comments. Before he gets us all dressed up.

Add it in, we can retcon things if necessary.

It’s always a balance between waiting for player input vs delaying the game. The occasional minor time-reversal is inevitable.

Well, that’s a start :smile:.
On Eoin’s part, he was getting irritated by what he saw as someone carrying on the squabbling and point scoring while there was a job to do.

And on my part, I thought I was playing him a bit too detached and unfazed by the tension in the group. The way I read Hayu’s tone and her addressing him directly gave me an opportunity to course correct.
