Health related recalls

Because it sems like everything we eat, drink, breath and do is trying to kill us. Seems wise to try to keep track.

This was what I suspected would be the case. Just to be clear, this does not mean McD’s is ever a healthy place to eat!

Investigations indicate that Grimmway Farms was the common supplier of the organic carrots consumed by individuals before they got sick, according to the CDC. On Saturday, Grimmway Farms — which is one of the world’s largest producers of carrots — initiated a recall for multiple sizes and brands of its organic baby and whole carrots.
The recall applies to carrots sold at Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Sprouts, 365 from Whole Foods, Good & Gather from Target, Marketside from Walmart, GreenWise from Publix, Simple Truth from Kroger, and more. A full list is available on the FDA website.

Given the omnipresence of veggie platters, this is concerning.

About two days ago I got a robocall and an email referring to carrots I’d bought in October. (Not the so-called “baby” carrots which to me always taste like mold.) We’d already eaten them without incident and bought more. The latter I dumped.

Gee I wonder where the e. coli comes from. Couldn’t possibly be from workers with no access to toilets, or time to use them.

I’d figured they were irrigating the crops with contaminated water. I forget how/why it ends up in beef, unless that’s what the cattle are drinking (& not sure it works that way)

The FDA said despite the results of microbial tests it conducted, Tom’s continued to distribute merchandise based on the test results of final products, but did not investigate the quality of water used in the process.

Just that damn regulatory overreach strangling our businesses! Gaaaaaahhhhhh!!!

Listeria contamination killed an infant* and sickened pregnant mother. The infant’s twin also died, but that child’s sample did not test positive for listeria and their death is not included in the outbreak

*Infant means a child under a year old, so probably old enough to be eating solid food

Not a recall as such, but with Xmas coming, worth being aware. As a pediatrician, this, honestly, makes me incredibly angry.

Items are more likely to avoid scrutiny, Murray says, if they’re sent under what critics say is a loophole in U.S. law. It’s the same one that online retailers have used to send cheap clothes to the U.S. — and that smugglers use to ship fentanyl and counterfeit drugs to the U.S. For toy sellers, the strategy helps foreign businesses undercut U.S. retailers and dodge safety requirements.
The law is called de minimis. While that name implies something small, it’s a big deal.

Damn it, I like cucumbers, just ate one today.

This part seems especially good to know:

it can take up to a week for someone to become sick after salmonella exposure, and it can take up to a week for symptoms to subside. the recall announcement recommends contacting a healthcare provider if you think you may have become ill in association with this salmonella outbreak. there are medical tests that can be done to see if your illness is the same type as the salmonella in these cucumbers. as the announcement mentions, infections from salmonella can sometimes cause long-term illness and disability, so you really want to have as many records of your infection being linked to this outbreak as possible just in case there are long-term complications.

According to a November 27 alert by the California health department, officials in Santa Clara County found evidence of bird flu virus in retail samples of a batch of Raw Farm’s milk, which has been recalled. It is the second time that retail testing has turned up positive results for the company and spurred a recall. The first contaminated batch was reported on November 24. The two recalled batches are those with lot codes 20241109 (“Best By” date of November 27, 2024) and 20241119 (Best By date of December 7, 2024).

Of course, there is also this:

After the first recall, a representative for Raw Farm said in a video posted to its YouTube account that the risk of bird flu was “not a big deal.” In the email on Monday, McAfee seemed to suggest the same.

Why raw milk is a thing is beyond me, but be aware. I guess…

I’m wondering what the Venn diagram between raw milk and (avoiding) seed oil is. The latter subject came up over Thxgiving & I thought perhaps they just meant canola oil (e.g. it’s highly processed).

But apparently, this is A Thing.

Not about a specific recall, but the overall system, and where we may be headed.
