Inside your home stuff

Excellent insight  hopefully you and your significant other didn’t get overly stressed during the remodel.

Thanks! But the stress was unavoidable. The initial plan was begun just before the pandemic. :confounded: And then the supply chain issues drove down new-appliance availability while driving up prices considerably. But the actual demolition and construction went well, the design was sound (I take a fair amount of credit for that part myself), and now we’re hugely happy with it. But what with one thing and another, our brand-new appliances sat on an outside porch in their original cardboard boxes for a full year, just burning through warranty time, before they finally got installed and used, so that part was a drag.

Well don’t they sound like a fun couple!

We have a few switches like that - in 2 of the bedrooms & the living room, there are no ceiling light fixtures. Just a socket tied to a light switch.

In our den, there’s four switches on one plate, and for years one of the switches confused me - “does that switch control this plug, or the other?” Neither - it didn’t do anything. Later, when I had to replace the ceiling fan*, I finally figured out that the swithc controlled the light on the fan; the old fan had no light fixture.

*Horseplay; not me

I had a couple switches like that; I’ve since pulled the switches out, capped off the wires to them (one pair were 3 way switches properly fed from one of the switch boxes), and put blank plates to keep naughty fingers from poking around inside the box. I got lucky in the the local home improvement store carried blanking panels for multi-gang switch plates.

That is really cool. We kind of need some sturdy cat shelves for Nimbus. He craves being up high.

Update on the range and freezer. Decided the range wasn’t the best use of our resources right now. Bit anxious to keep and pad savings. The range wouldn’t help us save much, just be nicer.

The chest freezer is much more affordable and will pay for itself in food savings. The ability to buy and store frozen foods like meat, berries, and veg when they are on sale will save us money. My spouse has several recipes he isn’t using much because they just make too much food. They are very freezable tho. I’d like to freeze the 5 extra portions of veg chilli rather than eat it for lunch for a week

We’re looking at this one. Hopefully there will be a sale soon. Big enough to store everything a family of three needs. Not so big stuff will get lost. We’ll buy baskets to help with organizing and rotating foods

I do think that it’s a decent choice to focus on the immediate benefit of the freezer. The range i do think would be great for your home but wait until you’re 100% sure you’re ready

we bought that same freezer (iin white) about 6 years ago to hold the fish we catch, lobster tails, frozen veg and - as you also mention - leftovers from my cooking big batches of curry or beans, etc. it has been great, but i suggest defrosting on a better roitine than my lazy butt. it can be a huge chore if left to form a mini glacier in the bottom!

Thanks! I’m glad someone else has this model.
We will need to put the defrosting into the house maintenance calendar. Then it might actually get done once a year

I too have this model - purchased about 5 years ago and still going strong. Definitely makes it less stressful to shop at Costco as a 2 person household.

We have a huge (7 ft) coffin freezer plus 2 large upright freezers, and are constantly looking for more space. Between garden produce, Costco finds and my wife’s bake shop, there is never enough. That said, can’t help with induction, but eager to hear from folks who know about such things.

I should have said that our family doesn’t need a coffin freezer  since many smaller families do need and use them! For us, it would just end up accumulating food that didn’t get eaten in a timely manner.

I think we have stuff in our freezer that predates our 10th grader
For when the time is right, I guess…

I think we also still have “Adams”-branded spices from when we lived in Austin, so NLT 22 years ago…

& then there’s our liquor cabinet.

Wish I could say I did that. Nice makeover!
