The one thing i dislike about pyrex is that the lids warp and get damaged somewhat easily, especially if you throw them in the dishwasher. And the lids are plastic, i kind of would prefer a silicone lid. Reminds me i need to buy some replacements soon
I often just shove the whole pan in the fridge, if there’s a lot left. If there isn’t much, I’ll use the bowls that came with our dishes (semi-porcelain) and put plastic wrap (not touching the food) over it.
We’re setting smol bags of dry cat food on top of the plastic container into whom we used to dump it. The cat doesn’t tear into the bags - he’s well fed and happy - and we don’t have any ees puppers right now, so it’s safe.
A yt vid I recently watched not only recco’d leaving the food in its bag b/c access to the lot # in case of recalls, but also just putting the entire bag into a lightproof sealed container. I’d already been thinking we needed to quit using the plastic thingy for the dry food, and the bit re: lot #s and recalls was a Lightbulb! moment.
ETA:
One of my GFs said she has some trouble with stuff sticking to metal bowls. /shrug
I always worried about using a hand mixer in glass bowls, and scratching or yikes! chipping them. Ceramic mixing bowls don’t seem to have a problem with it, but I often have a problem with them. All our ceramic ones are so damn heavy. I’m getting tired of heavy pots and pans and bowls.
I do often do this as well, chuck a pot or pan into the fridge. Honestly i don’t love doing it because it does take up more space than necessary, but the convenience often wins out. for smaller amounts i might put it in smaller pyrex containers or sometimes use some small metal bowls i use for food prep and plastic wrap it.
I haven’t had this issue but i guess it depends on what kind of food one is storing in them. But i definitely don’t think i could do ceramic because of the weight, and i do have some glass ones that i do like to use as well. I use them for foods that i might want reheated straight in the container because the metal ones are a no go (obvs).
I bought a set of GlassLock containers in various sizes maybe 15 years ago, haven’t broken or damaged a single one. The lids are plastic, but I never put them in the microwave during reheating, and I take care not overfill the containers to minimize food contact with them. Love them! I also have some Pyrex dishes for cooking/reheating.
I do still use some plastic containers (clear polypropylene) for storing raw fruits and veg, like the vast quantities of blueberries we eat in this household. They are never heated, are hand-washed, and I don’t store foods that are fatty/oily in them.
The bowls that came with our dishes are a tolerable size (and there are also itty bitty ones), and it’s easy to stick 'em into the nuker (w/o the plastic wrap).
We have a small round glass Anchor Hocking container with a silicone lid, like these:
It’s nice to use except that the lid is hard to wash and dry because of the deep concentric grooves. We are slowly getting rid of plastic in favour of silicone, but we still don’t microwave it.
Breaking news! Latest study shows silicone causes personality change and warts!
Those look nice! We have 2 sizes of pyrex with flexible lids. I’m bad about dishwashing the lids but do always use the top rack. Spouse usually hand washes them.
We have a couple of bigger casserole glass pans that have accompanying lids that must be hand washed. One has a locking seal that really seals up tight.
Anything getting heat is glass, metal, silicon, or bamboo now. We completed replacing all the utensils. We replaced the last few with some Cuisinart stainless steel my spouse likes a lot. Still use Oxo canisters for rice, flour, sugar. Hand washed and never heated.
Plastic is so convenient but also so potentially unhealthy and bad for the environment
This is how we do the kibble, though the container isn’t light proof. Top cut off the bag, bag into container with seal, and it’s safe from the marauding kitties
Don’t know which I want more: the chair, or the dog.
(insert ‘why not both’ gif here)
We use these for bulk items like that, or occasionally canning jars for less frequently opened containers. They’re in drawers or cupboards, so light is not a problem. I believe you can get silicone gaskets for them now to replace the old rubber ones.
(Why can’t I find the Monty Python “storage jars” sketch?)
eta: Wait, I just did.
I have a couple medium-sized ones that I use, but I am finding the weight of the larger ones hard to handle now that I’m reaching the crone years. One of the parts of getting old that sucks…
We have a decent amount of glass containers, but we got a large set of these, which you can put over bowls, small pans, cups, and so forth.
They have pets (toy basket and pet bed in the pic), so maybe it’s so the dog or cat can watch pet centric videos when the humans are away?
Ya’ll may recall that our house was struck by lightning back in August, frying one of our heat pumps. Well, the spare part finally arrived and was installed, only to find that the wireless thermostat in our bedroom was also fried. Apparently, this is not uncommon, because they brought a spare, but damn! We keep discovering other things that were taken out by it, but hopefully coming to the end. Anyway, heat in the bedroom again! Yay!
Must…hold back…
I mean, seriously, the jokes just line themselves up after that!
Thought about that. Did it anyway. Yay me!
