We’re doing full albums now?
This one’s an oldie but a goodie:
It’s Friday. Let’s live a little.
Just looking at the sheet music for that sonata… It looks absolutely insane
Yeah, but evidently playable with smart fingering and pedalling. I’ve spent time looking it over, and thinking to myself, “OK, this note to this hand, PEDAL…”
It’s a Russian thing, I think - they turned out monster pianists (e.g., Richter, Gilels), and provided them with monster music, given that so many of their composers were monster pianist-composers (e.g., Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and evidently Stanchinsky himself).
In this particular case, though, the first movement is heartbreakingly beautiful in the hands of a pianist who can negotiate it. The virtuosity is less obvious without the score in hand: it’s kind of like Bach’s fugues in that it arises out of the needs of the voices. The kicker here is that this was written by a very young man - Stanchinsky died at age 24.
Getting three moving lines with only two hands is something I’ve always associated with Russian composers, but isn’t as exclusively Russian as I thought. It does remind me a lot of Bach though.
All I can say about the snippet of sheet music is that it’s three moving lines of syncopated 32-note triplets. I can barely understand it. I’m sure the person playing it makes it sound effortless, but it is anything but effortless.
Yup, not at all effortless. That YouTube thumbnail is not the toughest passage. There is a rolling score in this video; you can judge for yourself. (It’s worth the time, I promise.)
It’s sort of inherent in contrapuntal keyboard music - the lines need to go where they need to go, or the music falls apart, so finding compromises that allow the hands to encompass the music can be a real bear. The difficulty is baked in.
Hometown lads…
I have a lot of respect for Townes’ music, but he’s yet another artist who I usually like better in covers…
Etc.
They do not like people in Canada when they serve up “topic” videos - we’re evidently pirates and hooligans. This reluctance to show videos to Canadians is somewhat ironic when the artists are from Canada, like, say, Cowboy Junkies…
For the Canadadadians:

Mia Doi Todd - My Room Is White (Flying Lotus Remix)
[details=Lyrics]
My room is white, the walls
And all my appliances, all compliances.
I live in silence, my windows
Closed to traffic, all that racket.
You are the opposite. I could never fit
Into your apartment.
Are we going to give up or (are) we going to try?
Are we going to give up or (are) we going to try to learn what life is?
The tide comes in, and we’re caught
By the rocks and the wetness neverendless.
We kiss for the first time, our lips and tongues
Tied in fitness, infiniteness.
Then the ocean pulls back somehow,
To reveal a crowd of uncertainty.
Are we going to live up to the words we said?
Are we going to live up to love we made? Made? Made?
A house, a garden, a family tree,
Fruit aplenty, all varieties.
Desire fulfilled,…[/details]
Yael Naim : Toxic (concert Arte live web)
[details=Lyrics]Baby, can’t you see
I’m falling
A guy like you
Should wear a warning
It’s dangerous
I’m fallin’
There’s no escape
I can’t wait
I need a hit
Baby, give me it
You’re dangerous
I’m lovin’ it
Too high
Can’t come down
Losing my head
Spinning round and round
Do you feel me now
With a taste of your lips
I’m on a ride
You’re toxic I’m slipping under
With a taste of a poison paradise
I’m addicted to you
Don’t you know that you’re toxic
And I love what you do
Don’t you know that you’re toxic
It’s getting late
To give you up
I took a sip
From my devil’s cup
Slowly
It’s taking over me
Too high
Can’t come down
It’s in the air
And it’s all around
Can you feel me now
Intoxicate me now
With your lovin’ now
I think I’m ready now
I think I’m ready now
Intoxicate me now
With your lovin’ now
I think I’m ready now[/details]

One of my favorite Britney covers, right up there with this one:
Pop covers, is it?
Covers are such strange beasts. Most interesting when they jump genres or in some way shake things up and yet still bring along the original essence in some form.
Chet Faker - No Diggity (Live Sessions)
[details=Lyrics]Shorty get down, good Lord
Baby got 'em open all over town
Strictly biz, don’t play around
Cover much ground, got game by the pound
Getting paid is a forte
Each and every day, true player way
I can’t get her out of my mind yo
I think about the girl all the time yo
East side to the west side
Pushing phat rides, it’s no surprise
She got tricks in the stash
Stacking up cash
Fast when it comes to the gas
By no means average
As long as she’s got to have it
Baby, you’re a perfect ten
(I like the way you work it
No diggity, I gotta bag it up)
(I like the way you work it
No diggity, I gotta bag it up)
(I like the way you work it
No diggity, I gotta bag it up)
(I like the way you work it
No diggity, I gotta bag it up)
She’s got class and style
Seen knowledge by the mile
Baby never act wild
Very low key on the profile
Catching feelings is a no
Let me tell you how it goes
Curves the words, spins the verbs
Lovers it curves so freak what you heard
Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo
Man that girl look good
Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo
Play on, play on
Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo
She’s got class and style
Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo
No diggity no
(I like the way you work it
No diggity, I gotta bag it up)
(I like the way you work it
No diggity, I gotta bag it up)

No diggity, I gotta bag it up)
