Kinda Commie Memes

Eh, I’ll admit I groove more with Trek than Wars, but it’s all good, there’s more than enough sci-fi to love. Whatever floats your boat.

…and what about Babylon 5?!? :smiling_imp::rofl::smiling_imp::rofl:

Once a very-much-not-a-stoner guy at a party tried to get into a heated argument with me about whether SW was sci-fi. “IT’S NOT SCI-FI, IT’S A SPACE OPERA!!!#*@#!”

I Kessel Ran from that conversation in way under 12 parsecs (I’m so sorry I can’t help myself sometimes)

The real question, for this thread, would be where the good Commie memes are at… :rofl:

Better than both, though marginally better than ST and way better than SW.

Always blame Reagan!!! I was right to hate the guy when I was like 6 or whatever.

Although, sometimes, you can Blame Nixon… but mostly, blame Reagan!

I know next to nothing about american history, unless is related to what they did to others. The only thing I recall about Nixon is something something watergate and that this is the mofo who declared war on drugs to keep oppressing the minorities after they passed the anti segregation laws.

Also his nose looks like a dgets thumped in the head, somebody drags him out of scene

That’s accurate… as for Nixon’s foreign policy, he had Kissinger, and we all know what a piece of shit war criminal that guy was (SE Asia, Chile, etc). What’s really weird is that their global north policies (detente) were actually pretty good. And in many ways, Nixon was our last “liberal consensus” president, upholding the tax structure and signing in the Environmental Protection agency and supporting various measures to support integration. Nixon is very weird.

I have not read it, but you might want to check out Rick Perlstein’s book about him, Nixonland, which is meant to be very good…

I’m unfortunately very aware of Kissinger policies, as I had the pleasure to be friends with Chilean exilees. The book recommendation looks great, will put on my wishlist :slight_smile:

I think that’s true of the whole planet! :grimacing: But yeah, hearing it straight from Chilean exiles would put that asshole into stark relief… :rage:

It’s on my list to read, too at some point in the future…

My hot take after checking the wikipedia summary is that it was someone who probably cared a lot about americans, but had a very limited definition of what “american” was. As for his foreign policy, it looks like most of his actions were dictated by a very strong anti-communism personal belief.

The Chilean coup d’etat combined a bit of both. Pinochet not only was firmly anti-communist, but also restored the status quo of several american companies that kept syphoning Chilean resources off to America. My friends were not exacly communists: they were a bit to the left of what you would call liberals in the US - strong nation support, and get the goverment to keep in check the excesses of capitalism - but at least one of them was in the Pinochet black list for, basically, having a traditional folk music band, of all the things (think Pete Seeger situation, but more Inti-Illimani in style). The other one was fresh out of university and my guess is that probably “mingled with the wrong factions”. They were lucky, as they were able to book a passage - one to Spain, the other to Canada - and remake their life there. They lost many friends in the purge.

The one living in spain returned to Chile after the fall of the dictatorship, and last I know (is more a friend of my parents than mine) had a teaching position in one of the Universities (though probably he’s now retired, or about to be). The one living in Canada remained there, as he already made his life there. He always talked about retiring to Chile, but sadly passed away a couple years ago. I still miss him.

Regan’s election win is why I am living in Canada. My parents saw his election as a sign the US wasn’t headed in the right direction, so my mom decided to do her medical specialization in her home province and we all moved up when I was 5. It’s been interesting watching the events south of the border since, it’s been a long slow march towards fascism.
