Perhaps a new topic that points to this thread – folks might not be looking at the “unread” list.
Personally, I haven’t voted because it doesn’t matter. It has a name already. You want to rename it, and I understand why. But whatever the name, it’s just going to be a bookmark in a long list of other bookmarks.
None of the choices seem particularly compelling to me. Some of the names are a bit whimsical. I haven’t worked much with any of the newer TLDs, but I can tell you that a lot of corporate firewalls (including mine) block them en masse, if that matters to you.
Personally, if it were my decision to make, I’d lean away from anything that looks back towards where we came from. Most everyone we want from there has already come here. Our challenge now is going to be to attract new people-- our kind of people-- who may not understand the inside jokes and references.
Something plain, short, very vanilla, and a .com, .org, or .net TLD is the way to go, in my opinion.

mutantflag.com isn’t
Not sure why that came up as an alternative to “freakflag” but whatever.
I think I’m probably just tired, but doesn’t that look back towards where we came from? (“Happy Mutants LLC” and all that)
Indeed, but that’s one of the reasons they want to change it-- the potential for legal action from the Orange Owl.
Absolutely and I agree with the point of the rename - though for me, a clean break, along with non-pettiness should be in the list of reasons too. Sadly, this scuppers elsewhere
, which in isolation is a perfect (no, autocorrect, not ‘perirectal’ - where did you get that from anyway.) name for the feel of the place, otherwise.
I disagree; since it stands on its own merits, the reference is just a bonus, which will lose relevance over time.
Perhaps we should let auto-correct select our new name?
Perirectal.cafe ftw
I picked
Adhocracy, because it was my suggestion, it’s a nod back to The Other Place and it’s how we’re organising here.
HappyMutant.space because it’s what we’ve already got, gives a nod to where we’ve come from and describes who we are.
I was voting for HMSElsewhere. I’m aware that it refers back to an unpleasant episode, but I wasn’t involved and it doesn’t carry the same weight for me that it does for others. I like the sound of it and the nautical/piratical themes it suggests, but now that I write it out I don’t think it balances out so I’ve withdrawn it.
I don’t have a third vote, none of the rest really speak to me.
This is where I should make a joke about how Google keyboard needs to honour ‘safe’ search’ mode, when updating its weighted graph of vocabulary, isn’t it.
(I keed, I keed)
And yeah, @crenquis is right: [quote=“crenquis, post:106, topic:315”]
Perirectal.cafe

…needs to be on the list.
Fair enough. My view’s an opinion, and I could be wrong. I’d actually like to be wrong, as otherwise I like the name.
C’mon guys. Do I have to do all of the work here?
Woah, current voting is obscene.
Currently leading the pack is Elsewhere, followed by: Adhocracy, MutantUnderground, EndoftheWorld, HappyMutantSpace, Commentariat, NumbersStation, Allthelikes, MutantSpeakeasy, h.ms, HMS Elsewhere, Rebelmutant, Snark exchange, Annexia, Sanctuary, SnickerSnark.
If the bottom eight were eliminated today that would leave:
Elsewhere, Adhocracy, MutantUnderground, EndoftheWorld, HappyMutantSpace, Commentariat, NumbersStation, Allthelikes
You could say that went off like a damp squib?
I’d love to figure out a way to get us to a three way race. Is there some kind of March Madness thing we can do to get to a winner?
I was actually hoping to cut it down even a bit more than that - maybe going top five, then top two, with a single vote in each of those rounds. But I’m fine doing it however people like.
I could actually structure it like an elimination contest - pit one name against another (i.e. SnickerSnark vs HappyMutants) but I think that might just be confusing.
It does sound fun though? Can we have them duel to the death?
Probably the poll idea is the best way to go. I like either method fine @Cynical’s way or @waetherman’s. I def think next move is top 8. From there I propose we see how neck and neck things are and decide next steps.
