Tasmania’s Health Department has revealed it sent incorrect COVID notifications to 540 people on Saturday, but in trying to clarify the information to media, had to issue multiple corrections.

Not one, two, or three times, but four attempts were made to correct the record.

The department initially said 540 people received messages from the department on Sunday saying they were close contacts when they should have received positive COVID results instead.

It then reissued the media release saying the incorrect messages were sent on Saturday rather than yesterday and all 540 people had already either had a positive RAT or received a positive test result from a lab, meaning they already knew they were positive.

Confused? So were we.

A third email corrected a typo in the name of the acting state health director, but minutes later, a fourth email resent the whole corrected media release and clarified the error leading to the incorrect notifications was from Public Health rather than the laboratory.

“On behalf of the Department of Health, I apologise for the error and for any inconvenience caused to the recipients of the incorrect messages,” acting state health commander Dale Webster is quoted as saying of the 540 notifications.

It is the second time in a week the department has had to apologise for incorrect COVID notifications.
