Love in the Time of COVID-19

It is pretty much like a covid test. Boogies on a stick, into a tube of goo. 15 min later, you know. It will tell you A/B, but not H whatever, / N whatever. Subtyping requires more tech.

I should also clarify that when i mentioned A/B test i meant in the scientific method of testing. Like you can’t test a version of you that got no vaccines and a version that did and see which fared better after being infected

I’m guessing the infection rate is much higher, since lots of people just aren’t getting tested for it now.

Our neighbor across passed away a week ago from pneumonia. She was probably early to mid 70s. I wonder if it started as Covid?

Fatigue and fog: Navigating Nigeria’s long COVID crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic may have subsided, but the battle is far from over for millions. In the shadows of recovery lies a new epidemic: long COVID, a silent storm reshaping lives, economies, and health care systems worldwide.

In a quiet corner of her garden, Morenike takes slow, measured steps. Each movement is deliberate, a testament to her resilience. The 43-year-old mother of two, who chose not to use her real name to protect her privacy, used to run a thriving small business, but now she struggles with unrelenting fatigue, a draining legacy of long COVID.

Only from the public consciousness. It is very much now an endemic plague mostly ignored unless it gets you or yours. I have hope that the increasing incidence and recognition of the devastating effect of long covid will spark more research into long-acting post-viral syndromes which have long been blown off as ā€œmalingeringā€ or ā€œpsychological,ā€ particularly when the sufferer is a woman. But current leadership at HHS and NIH are unlikely to invest in such research at this time, and so it may be a while before we delve into it deeply enough.

I’m surprised the CDC is studying this and putting out information

That’s not necessarily a reason to be alarmed, said Jacqueline Nolting, an Ohio State University researcher who helped CDC with the latest study.

Available studies suggest people who are infected mount antibody responses and may develop natural immunity, which is ā€œgood news,ā€ she said.

So what’s next, the Feds promoting herd immunity? Maybe flock immunity?

Stop feeding your pets raw meat.

 I guess this is another reason for owners of ā€œfree rangeā€ cats to consider keeping them inside. Whatever they catch, kill, and consume outdoors is likely to be raw. :grimacing:

They just need to be trained properly.

This isn’t even a thing anymore but this quote form the executive order is disturbing.

It may be true they are low risk but the people they live with or come into contact with may not be low risk.

Studies consistently show that children and young adults have an incredibly low risk of developing a severe illness from COVID-19.

Pre-Omicron, infection meant you had 80% protection against re-infection one year later. Post-Omicron, this has fallen to 5% protection at one year, highlighting that vaccination is more important than ever for people with vulnerable immune systems.

There is something about coronaviruses in general that makes it so they do not confer long term immunity post infection. To the best of my knowledge, what that thing is is currently not clear, but it is characteristic of the clade. Yet another reason to hate this fucker. I do wonder if this something also might account for the speed that post-vaccination immunity wanes. :man_shrugging:

Montana

The bill was amended to specify that the legislation would ban mRNA vaccines ā€œfor infectious diseasesā€ and not ā€œgene therapy products used to treat cancers or genetic disorders.ā€

Supporters had previously testified that the vaccines caused more harm than good.

ā€œ[mRNA vaccines are] the most destructive and lethal medical products that have ever been used in medical history,ā€ Dr. Christine Drivdahl-Smith, a family physician in Miles City, told the committee earlier this month.

Really? Up there with icepicks, radithor, that malfunctioning cat scanner, thalidomide, elixer sulfanimide, that low-pressure chamber at Dachau, the gas tests at Porton Down, etc.?

Pretty much the opposite of all of them.

This is bonkers, he’s won’t get vaccinated because he believes the vaccine is bad for his heart.

Your know what else is bad for your heart? Having a machine pumping blood for your heart because it’s bad.

He also has the option to go to another hospital that will do the transplant but he’s trying to save kids.
