Love in the Time of COVID-19

While that’s likely true… ouch.

That will affect America, but not necessarily the rest of the world. I’d like to hope that other countries will pick up our slack and continue the research. So even if there isn’t as much hope for us, there’s hope for people as a whole.

Maybe that’s a little too hopeful, but I’m clinging to whatever hope I can find right now, so I’m going to try to keep looking for bright sides, thanks.

The second screenshot is some sort of study they’re now using.

Our daughter and her husband went to Chicago for 4 days.

She went to two sold out shows at Allstate Arena.

They did up the town shopping and dining.

Guess what happened, go ahead, guess. I’ll bet you can’t guess what happened.

He was at urgent care this morning with a high fever, if you didn’t already guess covid, it was covid.

For those who don’t know, Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois seats 18,500 for concerts, is past O’Hare Airport in the opposite direction from Chicago, is surrounded by a couple square miles of surface parking, and takes a couple of hours to get to one of those parking spots and then a couple of hours to get back home again if you’re staying in Chicago.

By definition, if you go there without masks on, you WILL get sick, even if it doesn’t happen to be Covid.

And, you’ve just lost half of an afternoon and all of an evening when you go, so trying to shop and dine in Chicago during the same long weekend when you’re planning on two shows at the Arena means you’re going to be stressed, wiped out and frustrated by your ‘vacation’, which is a further risk factor to getting sick.

I hope those shows were once-in-a-lifetime.

That may be but our kid has been known to get on a plane in the morning, fly to Disney, watch a parade and fireworks, fly home, within 24 hours and then go to work.

She also ran the Disney marathon on their honeymoon for some unknown reason and then crammed in more than I could do in a month.

Packing everything they can into a few days is how they enjoy stuff.

It exhausts me just hearing about it but it’s how they have fun.

If you ask her J-Hope is worth it. If you ask me it’s silly and she did get an I told you so.

Aw, that sucks. I hope he’s gonna be okay.

And this is why I’m still masking up in public, too.

The H5N1 bird flu has spilled over to a sheep for the first time, infecting a domesticated ruminant in the United Kingdom much like it did US dairy cows, according to UK officials.

The single sheep—a ewe—in Yorkshire, England, was confirmed infected after captive birds on the same property had tested positive for the virus, according to an announcement Monday. The ewe’s milk was found to be positive for the virus through a PCR test, which detected genetic signatures of the virus. The ewe also had H5 antibodies in its blood. At the time of the confirmation, the ewe had symptoms of the infection in the way of mastitis, inflammation of the mammary glands.

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Scripps Research Institute have developed a groundbreaking UNIVERSAL coronavirus vaccine that triggers STONG immune responses AND shows promise in neutralizing MULTIPLE coronaviruses, including those responsible for causing COVID-19, MERS, AND even the “common cold.” :test_tube::thread::arrow_down:

In a groundbreaking advance in the field of immunology, scientists have developed a novel “low-sugar” vaccine that aims to provide a broad protective effect against various coronaviruses, INCLUDING SARS-CoV-2. Recent studies conducted at Scripps Research reveal that the newly engineered vaccine

targets not only the virus itself but also the sugar molecules, known as glycans, that cloak the virus, thereby shielding it from detection by the immune system. This innovative strategy harnesses the potential to create long-lasting immunity, simplifying the vaccination process for future

infectious disease. An interesting fact that some may not know is that viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, use sugar molecules on their surfaces to hide from the immune system, much like a protective coating (sugar coatings aren’t only for candies). Now, researchers have developed a UNIVERSAL coronavirus

vaccine that targets BOTH the viruses AND the sugars they use to avoid detection. In preclinical studies, the vaccine REMOVED these sugar molecules from a stable region of the coronavirus spike protein, helping the immune system produce strong and effective antibodies to neutralize the virus.

As a witty counterpoint, here is how the current administration described COVID-19 on Wednesday:

“The COVID-19 pandemic is over, and HHS will no longer waste billions of taxpayer dollars responding to a non-existent pandemic that Americans moved on from years ago.”

Can’t say it’s a surprise, considering the administration’s other boneheaded stances. It’s still incredibly painful to see, but not a surprise at all.

I only hope other, smarter countries can take the lead and further develop these discoveries, for humanity’s sake.

And I’m sure the fact that it’s by political scientists rather than people with any background in health doesn’t speak to this being ideological rationalization at all.

But mortality was high among both blue and red states, they say? Wow, I guess either policies didn’t make much difference, or disease spreads. You know, one or the other.

I can’t even begin to comment on the lab leak hypothesis that continues to have supporters but never support. I am so sick of no-nothing pundits dressing up stupidity as serious questions.

Yeah… seems like this is just more “lib” bashing… :woman_shrugging: It was the Trump administration that politicized the pandemic. They made the choice to not roll out a national strategy of lockdown, because it was hurting blue areas harder first. I don’t know if they actually address that in the book or not, but it doesn’t seem like it from the review here.

the reality is that it was a pandemic of a novel virus, so it was gonna be problematic either way.

Oh, but they say they’re “left-leaning” like three times! So it must be considered criticism that only happens to sound exactly like the right’s counterfactual narrative! :unamused:

They always conveniently obscure tha fact that very good studies showed dramatic differences in M&M between areas that took those precautions and those that did not. But facts don’t matter anymore.

M&M? I figure one M is probably Mortality, what’s the other?
