What’s yr car worth now,
They couldn’t have found a more appropriate word?
Those size comparisons may be accurate but they really say a lot about how much the Mini Coopers have grown in size and how much the Tacoma bed has shrunk in recent years. But still, it’s nice to see someone trying to build a reasonably sized truck.
The continual Yankistani overuse of “impacted” and worse, “impactful” ahem drives me spare!
Yes, though I would say it grinds my gears. And brakes my patience.
But the alternative sounds affected.
turbocharged 3-cylinder
2nd time in a week where someone’s used that phrase regarding a new car. My son was telling me about how a new Mini (with a turbo I3) could be had for $24K.
Perhaps that’s more common than I’ve realized… I’m remembering “3-cylinder car” from the days of the Chevrolet Sprint & Geo Metro. Both of the ones I encountered were non-turbo, tho one was a cabriolet.
The BMW i8 combined a turbo i3 with electric motors. I think a Koeniggsegg gets something like 600 hp from a turbo i3? Am I remembering that correctly?
ETA: Yep. Koenigsegg Gamera. 2L 3 cylinder turbo rated at 590 hp. That’s one high-strung engine!
I once briefly pondered whether there was any chance of putting the little 3 cylinder turbo engine from a Smart into a Triumph Tiger. Kinda seemed like a good idea for a long range travel bike.
Tiger’s a beautiful bike.
Had a BF who had a Bonneville (who ran) and another (non-running @ the time) beautiful Triumph. Can’t recall the model of the latter one, but it wasn’t a Bonny and I don’t think it was a Tiger.
While it’s closer to a traditional piston driven engine than something like a Wankel rotary engine, it’s still massively different in so many ways that it can be difficult to compare it to anything else. It has no camshaft or throttle body, every valve is computer controlled, and it has 2 turbos that run independently against the same exhaust valves. It’s ridiculously complex.
Jalopnik has a deep dive into this engine and what makes it special:
(The specifics on the ICE component are about halfway down the article. It’s highly technical but fascinating to read.)
ETA: 3 cylinder engines used to be the kind of thing you’d only find on the most bargain basement of vehicles, but they are becoming more common these days. Especially in Europe where PHEV or MHEV cars are more popular than in the US. The Toyota Corolla GR is notable for having a 300HP 3 cylinder motor.
Well it looks like Musk can’t blame the plummeting Tesla stock price on overall automotive sales trends. All the non-Tesla electric cars are selling great!
Even with Tesla down 50% since Jan 1, it’s still running at a P:E of 87. Which means it’s still a cult rather than a stock.
