Note: ATS wasn’t the only new company angrily started up by critical ex-Ferrari brain-trust. Another was Lamborghini, and we know how they turned out. They’ve been trying to ding Ferrari ever since (sometimes gaudily, IMHO.)

Yep. And then there is Toyota:

And the Johnson Wax headquarters also. JW prez complained. FLW told him to move his chair. FLW was an asshole. He took credit (something he was known for) for architect Marion Griffon’s designs while downplaying her greater involvement.

Lamborghini is kind of a funny example. It was a successful producer of farming vehicles at the time, and Ferruccio Lamborghini began buying sports cars with his riches. As the story goes, he owned several Ferraris and was frustrated at the constant mechanical and other quality problems, so he complained personally to Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari responded by insulting Lamborghini and basically telling him to GTFO. Out of spite, Lamborghini pivoted from tractors to sports cars to prove he could build a better sports car than that stronzo Enzo Ferrari.

If you think about it, that’s about the most Italian origin story ever.

(Obviously the real story isn’t guite that cut and dry, but those are the Made for TV broad strokes as I understand them.)

I remember that made for TV movie. It’s title was just Italian obscene gestures and all the subtitles were bleeped out.

Tesla sure squandered their lead in the EV industry, didn’t they? Even aside from the now-poisonous connection to Musk, there are a bunch of competitors that are now both cheaper and offer better performance than anything from Tesla. This thing is a production car that beats multi-million dollar hypercars:

Even sans Musk’s dramas, his managerial style has not created the kind of work environment generally linked to desirable levels of job satisfaction, safety, respect, etc., and thereby success. When a boss’s own employees sense his toxicity, then …

No surprise that the Chevy Decap didn’t last long.

The aftermarket these days would quickly provide special, custom padding for those so that they don’t chafe before breaking the occupant’s neck at a stoplight.

I don’t know how anybody with enough imagination to create such a thing would not at the same time have enough imagination to understand why this would be a terrible idea.

Donut videos can pretty abrasive to watch, and this video is 5 years old (so, before the budget cap was introduced), but I found it to be pretty interesting:

I watch a lot of F1, and whenever I see a sponsor I’ve never heard of, my first instinct is to assume it’s some sort of sketchy shit. Thus far this instinct has proven mostly correct as if I dig into it, it’s usually some sort of crypto or gambling shit, or in the case of Sauber sponsor Stake, crypto-backed gambling.

That being said, the Philip Morris stunt noted in the video was impressively diabolical with their approach to get around the tobacco advertisement ban. There was a large barcode that at speed would resemble the Marlboro logo.

Here’s a follow up from a couple years ago with more sketchiness:

Tesla Had To Redesign The Cybertruck Because Engineers Couldn’t Make It Amphibious Like Musk Wanted

[…] But how did we get from Tesla promising a go-anywhere, conquer-any-terrain truck to the current disaster? According to the Wall Street Journal, it’s because the initial design was scrapped, and the final design was rushed.

It would have probably helped if there had been a clear, final design brief that outlined specific goals for engineers to achieve, but instead, Musk preferred to randomly tweet about new features the Cybertruck would have. The engineering team reportedly took those tweets seriously and attempted to deliver everything Musk promised online, including the part where he claimed it would be amphibious, but when that ended up being too hard, the engineers were forced to give up and start over in an attempt to deliver something Cybertruck-shaped […]
