I’ve never seen any of the Phantasms, but the ideas of funeral commodification and death’s separation from culture are pretty sad, really. Genre filmmaking is probably a more successful way to present those ideas, especially to a large(ish) audience, than anything else. Not saying the Phantasm series is necessarily pushing an issue, but the interplay of inspiration, creativity, and execution – the forms that take shape from the zeitgeist – is an interesting topic in itself.

Yeah, and this was a key concept that Coscarelli was trying to engage with.
But if you’ve never seen Phantasm, you should check them out. My favorite horror series after Evil Dead, for sure.
