Not Feminism 101

I know a lot of people around here have no idea what’s going on in Romance Writers of America, or don’t think they need to care because it’s just a bunch of romance writers, but you should be:

Read this whole thread:

Oh, and dissing Romance as a genre? I did in the past, but I am not proud of it. As a genre largely written by women, for women, a lot of the mocking was simply due to that. If your only exposure is the big publisher-name formula stuff, I suggest a) reading more widely in the genre and b) recognizing where your bias comes from. I would not say I am a romance fan, but you won’t see me dismissing the genre, now that I know why it’s been dismissed for so long. The fact that a lot of this kerfuffle is being pushed by a white man who claims the org – which has existed for decades – will collapse without him to lead it, is just icing on the cake.

As a follow-up: Dear asshat who wrote the Witcher review saying “women can’t swordfight”, there’s a woman outside who wants to know if you’d care to revise your bullshit statement.

Recently watched an excellent fight scene in Star Trek: Discovery involving both Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) against, well, everyone else:

Can anyone suggest good accessible resources for gender-based trauma? I don’t know how much this contributes to my other issues, but having trouble right now.

Can you explain a little more what you mean by gender based?

The best general book on trauma is The Body Keep the Score.

I wasn’t sure where to put this, but hair is a feminist issue, especially for Black women.

This must be so difficult for her, on a personal level. But, she’s still stunning. More importantly, though, she’s a fierce fighter for human beings and against corruption.

(This may not really be germane to this thread, but I don’t think it’s important enough to merit its own. Feel free to delete/move as one sees fit.) I just discovered that she has been unpersoned over at the other joint. Her posts are still there, well some anyway, but there is no user profile at all.

Wonder what that was about?

Do you follow her on Twitter?

She has many unfavorable things to say about a number of Western journos and has probably rubbed someone the wrong way.

Or she may have said Fuck You. I had DMed with her on the other place, and she said she was getting the usual BS there as she saw at most sites.

The usual BS is summed up by “It’s all about merit until merit has tits.”

If VICE outed me, in a precarious situation where I could be ubpersoned IRL by government or neighbours for being queer, I probably would have struck back, too.

The amount of hate she gets for daring to be A Woman (Who Makes Things) online is ridiculous.

On one hand: public forums suck when they devolve into shouting matches.

On the other: some people really do need to be shouted at.

My recollection is that Naomi appeared on BB, had some interesting things to say about tech, and was then instantly swarmed and harassed (in the “get out of our treehouse” way, not the sexual predation way) by the most misogynistic/insecure of the BB techdudes. IIRC, IzzyB was prominent amongst them.

Shortly after that, she departed BB and didn’t return.

I recall that vaguely. (I don’t think I paid a lot of attention to the thread she was on.) I just found it noteworthy because she was the subject of an approving blogpost, joined the discussion, and apparently so displeased the admins/mods/auteurs that she was lumped in with such miscreants as LearnedCoward and Donald Petersen.

SexyCyborg rubbed some of the women mutants who identify as feminist the wrong way, myself included.

It’s unfortunate that the techbros came for her like they did; nevertheless I didn’t get the vibe that her core values are the same as mine.
