Not Feminism 101

Absolutely… of the people the author talked about, she is easily the best known figure, though often less for her contribution to Marxist though, and more for her extraordinary life. I suspect, though, that many leftists are more than up on her work than modern philosophers.

I somehow missed this documentary…

My god, this has been fucking depressing…

I’ve been semi-following it. It IS depressing, not just from the boy-girl aspect but from the why the fuck are these people so rich and mentally/emotionally ill? But then again, what do you expect from a guy who idolizes Hunter S. Thompson (too bad Vincent Price didn’t live longer, he’d’ve been a much better mentor)?

As a woman and an artist, I’m sick of the conceived value that being an artist gives one license to behave like an asshole. I have no doubt that there are some out there who exploit their own illnesses to make a buck, which is both pathetic and infuriating. It also makes life worse for people who are trying to tame or abolish their own demons.

I feel closer to Vincent van Gogh than I do to Pablo Picasso, emotionally, but vice-versa artistically.

Word!!! Couldn’t agree more… especially because of the double-standard applied via gender. Women who are “assholes” are treated with far more contempt than men who do the same.

Reminds me of this Modest Mouse song…

Pretty much summarizes my thoughts on the Amber Heard/Johnny Depp trial.

I’ve tried to avoid the whole thing as much as possible, but the bread-and-circuses atmosphere surrounding the trial appalls me. People have treated this like a sporting match, taking sides and waving flags, instead of the tragedy of mutual pain and suffering that it is.

(And I can’t understand the Depp-did-no-wrong people. I remember when he was a teen idol, and even back then there was quiet talk about his temper and substance abuse issues. He trashed whole hotel rooms. He said some truly vile things about his ex Vanessa Paradis. Dude’s had issues for a very long time… so to me this seems like two troubled people locked in a toxic relationship. There are no “winners” in that kind of situation, just a tragedy all around.)

People are getting the verdict incorrect, too. It had nothing to do with abuse allegations, but about her article. And both were found liable.

Exactly this.

No comment necessary, really.

And my good friend’s daughter who has endometriosis - we wonder why nothing has changed since her mother dealt with all the same health problems.

When my mom had an oophorectomy in 1962, her left ovary, they called it a “chocolate cyst”. I talked to one of my OB/GYNs about it and was told it was more than likely endometriosis.

I’m guess that’s why she had four of her miscarriages, in the 1950s. Because the fifth and last one was due to being given the Pill to treat her bleeding, when they didn’t even fucking bother doing a pregnancy test.

If my mom had been properly treated, I might not be here (or I might be here in a different and older body, who the hell knows?), but SHE wouldn’t have to’ve gone through all that. Which would’ve made her, I’m presuming, a less-depressed person, at the very least.

I have the same thing, but it doesn’t bother me as much since I stopped being fertile. But when I was…it’s the kinda pain you WISH on your worst enemy.

My mother went through quite a few doctors in search of help for her problems–which lasted for years– only to get told “it’s all in her head.” When I was thirteen or so, she had an exploratory surgery, which found a ton of endometriosis and fibroid tumors. It was so bad that the doctors and my father elected to do a complete hysterectomy. (I still remember one of them coming out in the middle of the operation to consult with him.) That caused its own set of problems, since she immediately went into menopause in her mid-30s.

I know she would have been a much healthier, happier, and less-depressed person if she’d only had adequate support from doctors. Even though she’s passed, it still hurts to know she went through so much pain that she never should have had to endure.

Those issues seemed to skip over me, though the family history of early menopause didn’t. (I’m already done at 50.)

Our medical system has a lot to answer for.

I’ve gotten to the point where I am completely tired of not being seen as a person in almost every aspect of my life.

It’s okay to be athletic but you must meet the standards of masculine approval in regards to appearance and performance; and you can never EVER outdo a man in anything to do with athletics and truly make a living at it.

And it’s a Bridget-&-Mary-Jo riff!
