Argh. Cons do love to beat that debt drum. Funny, because it’s usually them who drive up the debt.

Almost invariably. Subsidising their friends in big business while cutting taxes on those selfsame people is a prescription for going into debt.

Meanwhile, in our gateway to the Pacific…

The line about people traveling alone needing to speak English is firmly in “I can’t even” territory.

JFC. They pulled out that line for an incident involving Vancouver International? We’ve already had that fucking discussion, WestJet, and it’s the wrong fucking answer.

This deeply and fully enrages me.

ETA: it may not even legally be a correct answer for the airport itself. I would have to do research, but French service (at minimum) may also need to be supplied.

That’s the best reporting I’ve seen about the Durant thing.

Of course they will. What’s a little murder and human rights abuse between friends?

I seriously fucking hope it’s them.

Two bodies matching the general description, a few kilometres from their abandoned vehicle. Given the small population, chances are no one local is missing. I’d bet serious money it’s them.

My only regret is they won’t stand trial if it’s them.

The good news is the election campaign hasn’t started yet, so there’s still time for this to blow over before the fall.

The bad news is that Scheer’s numbers had been declining to this point, and it had looked like he’d have an uphill battle to form government after the election. This will probably give him a boost.

Ideally, this would give Singh or May a better chance, but they’re looking like also-rans this election cycle. Say what you will about Trudeau (“2015 will be the last election under first-past-the-post,” my ass), he’ll do far less damage if elected than Scheer will.

Both Singh and May have either collaborated or publicly stated they’re willing to collaborate with the Cons.

Which leaves me, for the first time in my life, unable to vote for either of them with a clear conscience.

It feels like Trudeau’s opponents keep trying to make hay on ethics violations because a) it’s the only thing they can find that sticks and b) the Libs are usually attacked for ethics violations.

Which in itself feels unethical at this point in time. To quote Bill Nye, the planet is on fucking fire. I don’t really give a shit if the connection between Canadian big business, judiciary, and government continues to be as cozy as it has been since the French and then the English showed up (I’ll give the Vikings a pass since they didn’t stay).

As opposed to what, exactly? Repeatedly bringing down the government until either the Liberals take power or the Conservatives have a majority? Because that’s how Harper got his majority. And the Canadian public has made it pretty clear that they don’t want a coalition of parties to govern if it doesn’t include the party with the plurality of seats.

Both the NDP and the Greens are heavily invested in fighting climate change (especially the Green Party, for obvious reasons). I wouldn’t be surprised if “collaborate with the Cons” means “go along with whatever they say as long as Scheer caves on environmental issues.”

As I said, I want the Liberals to win this one, as that seems to be the best world we have available to us. But a minority Con party, held in check by three parties willing to bring their asses down the moment they try to weaken environmental legislation, is much better than a repeat of 2011.

All of the above, of course, presupposes that Scheer is willing to negotiate, and not just wield his minority as if he had a majority and dare the other parties to force an election, the way Harper did pre-2011.

That’s the thing. I don’t see the Cons being held in check. Not this time. The other parties would bluster and make noises about non-confidence, but they wouldn’t do it.

All of that hassle, all of the confusion… to push discussions of gender identity back from Grade 6 to Grade 8.

Well, it’s a better result than I had expected. Not that that’s saying much.

So what’s going to happen is all the kids who got exempted will find out what happened in class from their friends who didn’t get exempted.

And the kids who got exempted will learn their parents are fools who don’t think through things and don’t consider their children people.

So win-win, you’re saying?
