So, could a stadium of Americans sing the entire Canadian national Anthem?
Depends on where.
If it’s in North Windsor or Florida, the stands are probably full of Canadians or Canadian-Americans anyway.
Holy moly!
The noise… tell me it doesn’t sound like Godzilla?
Quite the East Coast accent that guy’s got goin’ there, eh?
Really? He sounds upper canadian to me!
Its really been a heck of a time in Canada for First Nations my god… what were they thinking?
Oh my. I feel like the sell-by date for stuff like this was the 70s. At the latest.
I know at storytelling/spoken word people will tell stories from other cultures – sometimes quite well – but. But but but. They don’t dress up, and they do their research. And they would immediately step down if anyone said, “hey, that’s from my culture” – because I’ve seen that happen, and it’s always been a gracious, sharing moment.
This, on the other hand, is… I can’t even.
Apparently one of them “claims” kinship… which, ok, as we’ve discussed, in Canada, thats a documented legality. Claiming to be a part of a band has legal implications, so, if you’re a band member, prove it, cuz otherwise, you’re just another white colonist taking what isn’t yours.
What with all the word changes in recent years, i couldn’t even sing the national anthem in full (and I had the old words in both official languages). <sigh>
sigh I wish I was surprised. Unfortunately, this is just another symptom of this province’s utter disregard and disrespect of indigenous peoples.
Its a double whammy! The troupe is from Alberta!
Why wasn’t I surprised to learn the CPC MP who led a bill to kill the CBC is from a riding that is too far away from the border or any ocean to have multiple options of multicultural publicly funded news and culture delivery media? Or that it was a CPC MP who led Bill C-308?
Without looking at the vote record, how close to the truth would I be in guessing none of the six HoC MPs who voted for privatizing the CBC represent ridings within 100 km of a national border or an ocean (or St. Lawrence River)?
Watching US events… and it just makes me think how incredibly grateful I am to Keifer Sutherland’s grandfather.
Thomas Douglas, sir, you are seriously a goddamn hero. raises glass
I just came here from Twitter. One of the people in my feed claimed anyone explaining how health care works… anywhere else in the developed world is “humblebrag”.
I’m not so sure. An awful lot of stories circulate about how socialised medicine works. The more people who tell Americans how it works in their country, the better. Otherwise it’s just an unknown bogeyman.
There’s so much MISinformation in the States regarding how it works. As has been pointed out by others: these explanations are helping to slay that bogeyman.
And it’s not about pride or feeling superior: I am fucking distressed that no one down there has anyone willing to fight for them the way Tommy Douglas did for Canadians. It really is a combination of helplessness and pure fucking gratitude that he did what he did.
And here, I was, thinking this thread was the most appropriate place for this pic.
Is it serious enough?
Of course it is! Look how the Irish PM is looking at Trudeau’s socks!
Pity that the picture isn’t in focus.
Caption contest?
He has another pair just like them at home? /sorrynotsorry
