Olds go nostalgic for the good old days of tech

Safari’s gotten really slow, and freezes on some things.

So it was fast before and not freezing, and they fixed that bug?

So many schematics.
So many oscilloscopes.

My dad bought a Philips reel to reel in ~1960

He recorded a lot of music off the radio when we were in Germany. Tapes are long gone . . .

It took me a little bit to get used to his delivery, but I continue to be fascinated by this toaster.

How would you describe the unix shell to someone first encountering it?

Funny-ish answers only.

Imagine trying to do live text chat with an alien. You know the alien is pink and has tentacles of some kind that it thinks with, but beyond that, things get weird. You have to talk to a bunch of different tentacles sometimes to get any kind of response. Sometimes the response is unpredictable in the way that requires you to go out to deep space yourself to visit the alien, where it is sitting happy as a clam, waiting for you to plug a cord into one of the tentacles to restart the quantum communications array.

The thing is, there’s no one alien language. They’re related but you have to use different languages to say different things. Sometimes you can’t say 2 things together because they don’t fit into the same language.

We had that toaster! Never broke. It probably still works perfectly.

i have a friend who collects toasters, and i sent him this video the other day. of course, he has one. his dream find right now is a chrome model that’s long and narrow enough that it holds two slices side-by-side. but now i want one of these toasters, haha

Now that’s an interesting hobby. Do they collect toast as well?

ha! no, just the toasters. but they aren’t just for looking at – he repairs them until they are functional (if needed), and then he uses them. not sure how OFTEN, but i know he uses them, assumedly on a rotating basis.

So he has rotating toasters also then.

lol – you know, even though he sticks with the consumer toasters, i bet if he found one like that he’d be tempted…

me too.
I have a pretty cool one but it needs polishing (not sure what to use) and it just uses a mechanical timer wound by depressing the slider thing. looks great but not an expensive collectable from what I can tell. but the one in the video is awesome!

I’m a fan of the powder (in the middle), but the soft cleanser on the left might be the better choice for dealing with a 3-dimensional object.
