If the outcome of this is the GOP splitting, that would open the field to the Dems splitting into the progressives and the Republicans 2.0, that seems OK.

And after you do that for a while, you end up with what we have in Belgium-- a coalition government made of the seven biggest pieces of 16 or 17 political parties, none of whom trust each other despite agreeing on 99% of everything. It sort of works here, because the EU government and our provincial governments do the actual work, while the federal government forms three committees and has discussions to decide whether today is, in fact, Sunday. It would be awful there.
