Our Felonious Ex-President

“If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do,” he told CNN.

Mayor Rob Rue told the BBC that the conspiracy theories - and Trump’s pledge to “mass deport” migrants from Springfield - were hurting the town. "People’s pets are safe in Springfield, Ohio, " Rue told the BBC’s Newshour programme. “We reached out to the JD Vance Campaign to let them know that we do not have any evidence that has happened, and I’ve made it known in multiple interviews that this is absolutely not true.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, on ABC’s This Week called the rumours “a piece of garbage that was simply not true”.

Springfield police have also said they received calls on Saturday about members of the Proud Boys marching in the city, after a video circulated on social media with a group of men carrying flags and wearing logos associated with the far-right group. Vance told CBS News on Sunday that he did not “align himself” with the Proud Boys but said the real problem was Harris’s “open borders”.

Well you have to expect that when living in a country with more guns than people.

This is a post from two years ago. It’s a handy thing to periodically review.

The summary cuts off the full list. You have to go up to the original post to see the whole thing.

I don’t personally believe this. But I thought it was interesting to note.

Yeah, given he did get hit in the ear. But if it’s true it wouldn’t surprise me.

I like to make up or use an off-message trope for my own conspiracy theories. I’m always disappointed that they never pan out, with a few exceptions. My theory with these Republican and Republican-adjacent would-be assassins is that they have a new radical ideology based on accruing reddit karma.

Bear with me.

As with my one conspiracy theory I’ll never back down on, about the origin of chemtrails, it hinges on bad suggestions from bad friends. Unlike the chemtrail thing, though, it’s a fully online phenomenon. Assassination is a big topic that drives discussions online. Addicts to the topic become thoroughly versed in every weird detail of every weirdo shooter and what’s known or imagined about their motivations and actions.

So the addicts of the narrative that Trump and/or Vance will get into office and “fix” things are having trouble reconciling their need for that outcome with its unlikelihood. They need that one weird trick that will allow god or whatever to shine down and turn everyone’s hearts while they’re filling out their ballots. They need their narrative, or just meaningless chaos, at the top of the reddit thread of their life. The worst thing is if the top of the thread has any woke in it. The subject’s friends aren’t dominating the discussion and there’s nothing about the thread that’s now worth saving. Rage!

You know what’s the opposite of woke? The opposite of “me-and-mine lose the debate all the time even with all the brigading and all the help we get from the algorithm?” The opposite of that is a mass shooting. Both incidents so far have been of the spray and pray variety. One was stopped before it started. It’s very damp stuff.

The first one, I don’t know. It looked a little bogus on the video, but there’s nothing really suspicious about it and the crowd’s reaction (or rather lack thereof) could easily be chalked up to people just not believing/understanding what was happening.

The second though, was kinda sus. Like he just happened to randomly decide to get in a round of golf where a would-be assassin just happened to be lurking? That’s a bit weird. According to the reports I saw, he didn’t announce he was going to be there, and the suspect didn’t have a chance to take a shot. They just happened to find him hanging out there with an illegal rifle.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, and I don’t know all the details but it’s just weird.

That seems to be the Republican campaign this season - be as weird as possible.

I wish 'creepy" had been the chosen word, because now “weird” will be forever linked to these folks and that’s insulting to those of use who are the good-weird.

I have a “stay weird.” bumper sticker. I kind of want one now that says “the good kind of weird.”

I’ve a button that reads, “Being Weird is not Enough”. I feel weird wearing it now.

Well… there’s “Oh she’s got really cool unusual boots and that hairstyle is so unique, maybe she likes the same weird music as me! She’s so weird, I hope she likes me!”

And then there’s “Oh he spends all his free time writing weirdly racist and political rants about goats in the comments section of a porn site. Dude’s fucking weird.”

I think most people can tell the difference.

I also think using ‘weird’ to describe Republicans was a masterstroke of genius. Because there’s just no better word for it, and it directly calls out how remarkably out of touch they are.

There’s still plenty of room for good weird. And those who care will know which weird you’re talking about.
