Just to note, it appears that the title of the book is actually Waiting for the Sun to Come Down
(not “Go Down”)
I can understand how the Jalopnik writer could make the mistake of writing what’s a fairly common phrase, instead of the correct title. It’s always sad, though, when someone is going to the trouble of praising and promoting something (especially something by someone they say is their friend!) and they get the name of it wrong. Ouch!
I have an example of what a picture looks like in two different mediums.
the source picture, taken on an iPhone 5S back in 2018 by myself of Shiva the Cat:
And a ‘lithophane’, as printed on a Bambu Lab X1C using their CMYK filament set:
(I’ve scrubbed the metadata off the pictures, because privacy. )
I struggle to describe anything I write as a ‘how to’ because who am I to tell anyone else what to do! But here’s a very careful picture I really enjoyed taking, once, of one of my favourite places in the world:
…And I did, many years ago now, write at some length about how/why I did it that way: On symmetry and serendipity – a photograph in Marrakech – Daveybot
very nice!
a million years ago, I was a photography student who shot mostly black and white 35mm SLR, developed my own film, and printed my own photos. what was then the cheapest way to be a photographer is now the most expensive. when I had the money (many, many years later) I did eventually buy a pocket sized Canon that shoots RAW format, but didn’t do as much with it as when in my honeymoon phase with the analog stuff.
at some point I’ll go through prints and rephotograph something cool with my phone to post here.
I also have an album with examples of ‘how not to do it’, aka playing around with long exposure times and painting with light.
For the large part, I was either shooting hand-held, or on a monopod for stability, especially on the long exposure shots. (unless I was hoisting the whole assembly up to get a picture of the crowd, like this one from Anizona 3’s rave, which I was no longer affiliated with but had a free pass to.)
I did photos for Anizona 1 and 2 (anime convention in Phoenix, AZ) back in 2005/2006; my equipment was partly laughable even back them- a 4 MP Kodak DX6490, but the ASIC on it was one of the best in that category of camera for the price, and I got quite a few years out of it.
I later upgraded to a Pentax K-x, a “real” digital SLR, but that has since broken down and I’m using the camera I have with me, some flavor of iPhone, which at this point is competent enough for my purposes.
