Photography - How-tos and examples

very nice!

a million years ago, I was a photography student who shot mostly black and white 35mm SLR, developed my own film, and printed my own photos. what was then the cheapest way to be a photographer is now the most expensive. when I had the money (many, many years later) I did eventually buy a pocket sized Canon that shoots RAW format, but didn’t do as much with it as when in my honeymoon phase with the analog stuff.

at some point I’ll go through prints and rephotograph something cool with my phone to post here.

I also have an album with examples of ‘how not to do it’, aka playing around with long exposure times and painting with light.

For the large part, I was either shooting hand-held, or on a monopod for stability, especially on the long exposure shots. (unless I was hoisting the whole assembly up to get a picture of the crowd, like this one from Anizona 3’s rave, which I was no longer affiliated with but had a free pass to.)

I did photos for Anizona 1 and 2 (anime convention in Phoenix, AZ) back in 2005/2006; my equipment was partly laughable even back them- a 4 MP Kodak DX6490, but the ASIC on it was one of the best in that category of camera for the price, and I got quite a few years out of it.

I later upgraded to a Pentax K-x, a “real” digital SLR, but that has since broken down and I’m using the camera I have with me, some flavor of iPhone, which at this point is competent enough for my purposes.

ORGANISER

The seventh edition of Belgrade Photo Month Photography Festival will be organized in May 2025, with photography exhibitions, lectures, workshops, portfolio reviews, etc., taking place in various venues around Belgrade, Serbia.

We are excited to announce an open call for submissions for our upcoming Photography Screening Night. This year’s theme delves into the multifaceted concept of postconflict, inviting photographers to explore and present their unique interpretations and visual narratives.

We invite photographers from all backgrounds and experiences to submit their work, whether it be documentary, conceptual, portrait, or landscape photography. We are looking for powerful images that tell compelling stories and provoke thought and discussion about the diverse aspects of postconflict situations.

you want to edit photos like the guy who very famously never edited any of his photos because he was so awesome he could do everything in-camera?
holy shit I want to cuss out whoever wrote this.

Hey, I’ll teach you how to edit like Adams for only $10! I’ll even provide you with the software he used!

Well he did do some masking and softening while developing his photos

ok, I thought it was all full frame and zone exposure but sounds like you know more about it than me. still, they just said “Ansel Adams” because he’s a famous photographer that their audience has heard of (as opposed to Jerry Ulesman, who was the king of darkroom editing, because he’s not a name buyers would generally know) even though most of Adams’ work contained no edits whatsoever; or was minimal, as you say. even if Adams did a little editing, it’s still an incredibly stupid thing to say.

I think he’s more known for manipulation while making prints. He was a master of techniques like dodging and burning.

Yup, those are the correct terms. I was too lazy to look them up last night. Thanks
