The scar episode displayed his openness (bordering on raw) and strategically applied folksy ways that along the way made allies out of enemies. He used racist language and, as a congressman, he opposed civil rights bills. Becomes president then, using his legendary political skills, pushes Congress to pass fair housing, civil rights, and voting rights acts. I wonder if JFK, a “Yankee”, would have been able to get all three acts through.
