WTF is that stuff?? Does time lapse photography play a part?

No camera trickery. It’s a non-newtonian fluid. At rest, it is liquid, but solidifies under any kind of force or impact.

I’ve just never seen such a material return to liquid form so fast. it looks like Silly Putty on fast forward!

Here’s a larger, longer version of the video.

It’s oftentimes known as oobleck, if that helps. As soon as you stop manipulating it, it goes liquid. The recipe I used when my kids were little was:

  • one cup water;
  • one and a half (or a little more if needed) cups corn starch.

You can add coloring to make it pretty.

I’ve seen amazing videos of people running across water/cornstarch solutions. It’s amazing.

The fluid I’m most familiar with is blood, which is a Bingham fluid. The cells which make up ~50% of the volume stick together and behave like a solid until a finite shearing stress is applied. But it doesn’t take much shear stress. So running across a pool of blood will just get your feet wet.

And likely some police detective following your bloody footprints.

“You don’t understand, officer! Most of the donors gave their permission!”

It’s amazing how much I repeat myself.

Too bad for Jon that his personal idol wasn’t around to give him a long career in revisionist propaganda. Oh wait…

Maybe this belongs in the dumbest things we’ll read today.
