I remember when this was happening so many people were like, “yay, fuck Gawker, it was a shit ‘news outlet’ anyway and they had it coming”. I mean, yeah, fuck Gawker indeed, but look at the big picture here. This guy and his deep pocketed benefactor was able to get a news outlet (as sleazy as Gawker was, and as much of a bag of shit as Nick Denton is, it was still a news outlet) shut down as well as personally bankrupt several employees. That should be shocking to anybody who believes in the First Amendment.

Yes! I went back to TOP to read some of my old posts on these topics and I was more of the opinion of, “Hogan certainly had a right to sue and Gawker (especially Nick Denton) really fucked up here, but this isn’t a great precedent…” which I think/hope was a bit more nuanced than the majority of the “lol Gawker sux” posts. Also at the time I wasn’t fully cogizant of all the shenanigans behind the scenes until the Netflix documentary came out about it. I just kind of instinctively knew that beyond the initial lizard brained schadenfreude that we’d all end up losing because of this. I didn’t understand at the time just how bad it would be.
