His recent show at the Courtauld was fascinating

The photographs don’t truly represent the almost savage way he applied and removed charcoal sometimes over months of drawing, having to patch in bits of paper, the depth and texture of the marks, sometimes the likeness is hidden by the application and reapplication.

Wow. Vibes like I get from Francis Bacon.

Tough call on where to place this one.

Yeah, I just read his Wikipedia page. He was definitely a mixed bag. His support of marriage equality seems legit, though. And he turned down an opportunity to represent Trump in 2018 in the Russia election interference case. But he also represented Bush in Bush v Gore, so…. . His 3rd wife was on the plane that hit the Pentagon on 9/11. He led an interesting life, that’s for sure.

Missed this news earlier in the week:

The Smithsonian also published tributes she received from other artists to celebrate her 100th birthday.

As you can imagine, between the singing (especially folk and gospel) and the children’s work and being a nearly lifelong Chicagoan, her loss is felt deeply in our household. Such an amazing hero.

The background circumstances in the article suggest it was accidental if this were a reasonable world, and I don’t like conspiratorial thinking, but Russian balconies, easily constructed circumstances, his having spoken out for peace, and this is not a reasonable world, so of course the first thought is “damn, the targeting is getting broader.”

Nor I. But:

  • a 39-year-old professional dancer is in a low-risk group for balcony accidents, and
  • high-profile Russians who oppose the war are in a high-risk group for the same accidents.

Yup.
