(I think when he said “The Old South”, he didn’t mean “everyone in the South”, he meant “The Confederacy”.)
In any event, what I posted refers to today’s South.
Even in the fucking confederacy, there was resistance. But what do I know, only living here and being a historian…
Exactly.
Jimmy Carter was the most exemplary ex-president our nation has seen in modern times, if not in its history. Rest in peace.
I’m sure he didn’t write any of that. And he probably had it queued up for years ready to go. And of course he makes it about himself. Anyway, as always, he’s a POS. Nothing new here,
Back on topic: RIP to a real one.
Keeping his legacy and dreams going, we again made a donation to The Carter Center; we didn’t think it would have been especially poignant this time. We’ve been doing so for the last several years. CC’s mission statement was what grabbed us; they hit big issues. Something to think about if one is considering adding a new charity to one’s list. (BTW: It’s a 501c non-profit.)

The former president made his mark in the space too, with noteworthy budget proposals giving NASA the cash needed to get the Space Shuttle program back on schedule after years of lagging development.
Perhaps more impressive, Carter’s words will be forever preserved on the golden records of the Voyager Spacecraft that are traversing interstellar space.
“We cast this message into the cosmos,” Carter’s writing tells any extraterrestrials fortunate enough to bump into Voyagers 1 or 2 in the distant future. “This is a present from a small distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts, and our feelings.”

Thanks to his contributions to the Voyager spacecraft, his words may also outlive us all and have visitors from other planets making a pit stop in rural Georgia before asking to be taken to whoever is in charge when they arrive.
