Published: October 21, 2000Jimmy Carter, a third-generation Southern Baptist and the first United States president to call himself a born-again Christian, has reached what he calls ‘‘a painful decision’’ to sever ties to the Southern Baptist Convention, saying that parts of its ‘‘increasingly rigid’’ doctrines violate the ‘‘basic premises of my Christian faith.’’
Mr. Carter’s decision, announced on Thursday in a letter that is being mailed this week to 75,000 Baptists nationwide, comes four months after the Southern Baptist Convention, the country’s largest Protestant denomination, declared its opposition to women as pastors.
In the same doctrinal statement, adopted last June, the group advocated a literal interpretation of the Bible. Two years ago, the group called for wives to be submissive to their husbands.
‘‘I have seen an increasing inclination on the part of Southern Baptist Convention leaders to be more rigid on what is a Southern Baptist and exclusionary of accommodating those who differ from them,’’ Mr. Carter said today in a brief interview. ‘‘In the last couple of years, this tendency of the Southern Baptist Convention leadership to ordain their creed on others has become more onerous for me and more difficult for me to accept.’’ …

I got to meet Jimmy Carter.
Tulane had a debate each year that was the biggest event on our campus. They got a lot of high level speakers.
That year, the debate was between Ford and Carter, moderated by John McLaughlin.
I was active in the video production club, TUVAC. One of the plum prizes for participating all year long was getting to work the shoots for the debate. I generally worked as the Technical Director - I sat next to the director and made the final decisions on what camera feed was recorded to the main video tape.
That’s how I got to mic up President Carter. I feel like Ford and McLaughlin were already miked up for some reason.
What I remember about him from that shoot is how surprisingly photogenic he was. His face was full of crags that caught the light in interesting ways that looked great on camera. He wasn’t classically handsome, but the camera loved him.
I feel fortunate that I got to meet him, even if briefly, and mostly through a lens.

Linda Lavin, who played Alice, died recently. I loved that show so much.
She lived in Wilmington, NC, and I once took a yoga class with her, but I was too star struck to speak to her - plus, I feel like in yoga class, you get to have your space.
