I’m really torn over this. On the one hand, I have a life-long belief in the importance of space exploration, and desperately want it to continue.

On the other hand, this is Musk, and I can’t fully express my emotions because once again I have misplaced my world’s smallest violin.

There isn’t really a conflict though. Musk is a grifter and putting space exploration on him is draining it of its ability to continue. His unworkable pet project needs to be cut out from it before it can move forward, and for that to happen it has to become something people can’t pretend will somehow come through if only we give him enough more money.

Musk is not about some noble effort at attaining knowledge and “space exploration”. It’s about his hardon for Mars, his ego and self-aggrandizement, and fuck the taxpayers whose sweat helps prop him up with billions in subsidies. Mars, for every practical reason possible, is a dead end. Terraforming? Even if we had the means right now, it would likely take many thousands of years to make it habitable. I say we should first focus on reversing what we’ve done to our environment and keep Earth habitable. A hell of a lot less expensive than going to Mars.

Very well-put.

See, here is where I wonder. How much is his irrational attachment to the idea of his owning his own planet like in the movies when he was young, and how much is repeating branding that he knows sounds good to investor…and how much is there even a difference with someone like him? Everything he says about it is obviously made up, but does he actually believe he can bullshit his way to Mars?

I think he might. I think people that rich have no idea how things are actually done, and on some level they assume they can just will their way to things because all the people who carry them are invisible to them. And that’s before you get into nonsense like affirmations or the world being a simulation, where they actually claim reality is set up to bend to them.

If that was a smart move before, it sure isn’t now. His happy face chirpings on Tesla only reminds investors of just how shitty their investments have turned out to be. 40% drop in Tesla stock, and legal actions and numerous boycotts in EU countries likely to keep stock down and not just due to what’s happening with Tesla, but due to Musk and his connection to the US transitioning to a fascist state. He (with Trump thrown in to boot) is the face of the naturalized ugly American and this is the EU’s chance to show what they can do. This is their World Cup: an all-EU team vs America. Musk’s bs is no longer working in favor of investors, and the only way things can turn around for them is for Musk to completely step away for Tesla’s decision making, stay out of politics, keep his mouth shut, and cease tweeting. Anyone taking bets on that? Heck, I’ll give you odds.

Nah. This is an open goal for China. The reality is that Tesla getting itself out of the way just speeds up the inevitable. Chinese people have considered Teslas to be low quality and that Chinese tech is better for a long time. Europe were led into corruption and moar diesel by the German government so it’s out of the picture. French too but really Germany led that.

VW is the biggest selling EV manufacturer in Europe. Ahead of Tesla and any overtly (BYD) or semi-hidden (Volvo, Polestar) Chinese manufacturer. Peugeot, Fiat, Seat, Dacia, BMW, Mercedes and many more have solid EV stables these days.

I wouldn’t write off the European car industry yet.
