in texass?!
Nah, this is at home in MD. (We have family in TX & we used to live in AUS.)
“Civil Engineering. Making people nervous since the Paleolithic era.”
That’s the most likely explanation for what’s happening here, except that most Queenslanders are already on stilts for ventilation and flood risk. It’s pretty common to see the already elevated houses jacked up another metre so the owner can build a lower story and replace the often empty space with rooms. Ventilation’s not much of an issue in Brisbane (the “house on stilts” thing works better in the tropics than it does in Brisbane in the subtropics), but building down does increase the flood risk.
And naturally, this house is opposite the river…
Wait, it looks like the house is on wooden pallets?!
Is the second shot a later one, showing some less precarious-looking support structure having been built to hold it up?
Wait, no pontoons?
yes. it is the same house. they had it lifted two stories and cinder block built underneath to make a carport, middle floor and to original house on top.
my gripe would be that the kitchen is all the way upstairs. i would hate to have to schlep the geocery shopping up three flights of stairs every time!
They could rig up some kind of pulley system… It’d fit with the rest of the aesthetic, too
After a home has been destroyed by coastal flooding, raising it allows it to be insured going forward. I think the idea is to build some portions of the lower exterior walls to be blown out by a huge storm surge and yet the house would still be supported. (not a civil or structural engineer)
North Alabama snow.
Bird bath heater making the blue birds happy
I don’t think we’re going anywhere today. Road closure list is growing.
Sounds awful.
That flower is gorgeous!
Yeah, well…it’s already in the mid 20’s here today, so there! Feels like spring.
Plow truck just went by so I should probably clear the end of my driveway. I like the exercise!
East of ATL…
Biblically accurate snow angel…
I think we got more than North GA/AL? Maybe 3-4 inches?
That’s too accurate. But not today, not enough snow to warrant shoveling.
