So now we need a measles thread

For example, a review of measles cases in California found that, between 1988 and 1991, SSPE cases occurred as frequently as 1 in every 1,367 cases in unvaccinated children under age 5. Another study that looked at U.S. outbreaks between 1989 and 1991 put the rate of SSPE at roughly 1 out of every 4,600 measles cases.

SSPE is the nightmare scenario in measles infections, killing kids years after they have recovered. The numbers I was taught were about 1/10k, historically. But the population catching the illness has changed. Rather than being school aged kids, it is now more likely to be preschoolers who are unvaccinated. that 1/1400 stat is terrifying. That is roughly equal to the number who will die outright. And that still will not be enough to get these guys to vaccinate. Witness the parents who lost their child telling folks that “It’s not as bad as they try to get you to believe.” It killed your baby! And can still kill your other kids who recovered. This just gets worse, and most public health folks seem to be giving up on any sort of control. To the point of closing vaccination clinics and firing healthcare workers. WTAF, people!?!?!

Why Measles Outbreaks May Be the New Normal

Recent Trump administration actions are setting the stage for a measles resurgence, experts fear.

I can see other countries denying entry to USians who can’t show proof of vaccination.

3 deaths in 1-2/1000 mortality illness. This is way bigger than currently being documented. Even developing countries with rampant malnutrition (a huge complicating variable) only see about 3/1000. I am rapidly losing hope of getting any kind of control of this. Although i have parents asking for the MMR early, i have way more who give me this “I’m not falling for that” smirk when i try to warn them of what’s coming. The loss of faith in healthcare as a whole might turn out to be the most damaging long covid (or long MAGA, i can’t tell the difference any more) effect of all.

From the new york times article:

Shortly after the 8-year-old’s death, a prominent figure in the anti-vaccine community blamed the death on the hospital, which he claimed had “improperly medically managed” the case.

Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. helped establish years before he became health secretary, also claimed that a “medical error” at a different hospital in Lubbock had led to the state’s first measles death.

These claims incensed experts, who emphasized that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is extremely effective at preventing measles infections and their complications.

“These are not medical errors,” said Dr. Michael Osterholm, who is an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota and a former official in the Department of Health and Human Services. “This sits squarely on the back of anti-vaccine voices that have continued to spread disinformation.”

Mr. Kennedy has faced strong criticism for his handling of the outbreak. A prominent vaccine skeptic, he has offered muted support for vaccination and has emphasized untested measles treatments, like cod liver oil.

According to doctors in Texas, Mr. Kennedy’s endorsement of alternative treatments has contributed to patients’ delaying critical care and ingesting toxic levels of vitamin A.

“This is a tragedy, an absolutely needless death,” said Dr. Peter Marks, who was the nation’s top vaccine regulator until he resigned last week from the Food and Drug Administration, in part because of Mr. Kennedy’s handling of the measles outbreak.

“To date, the federal response to the ongoing measles outbreak has been inappropriately focused on distracting and ineffective alternatives to the only truly effective prevention — measles vaccine,” he said.

Exactly why he is demanding evidence of vaccine side effects that have never happened. He needs to justify telling people to avoid the vaccine that could have saved 3 lives do far, but there will be more to come. This outbreak-morphing-into-epidemic is far larger than being reported, and RFK jr is already falling into the old covid tropes of “they didn’t give vitamin A!” (I guarantee they did, 200k units q 24 hrs x 2 is standard of care, what they did not do was give enough to kill their livers, which i suspect is what they are calling “mismanagement.”) Maybe it was that they didn’t give ivermectin? Just so we are crystal clear, THERE IS NO TREATMENT FOR MEASLES!! There is a very safe, very effective vaccine, but if you eschew that and get it, you are rolling the dice and doctors cannot fix it if you get snake eyes.

I’m gonna be putting this on repeat a lot, ain’t i? Fuck…

Measles bumps are on the skin, right? So just go to a tanning salon, and turn the UVC up to 11.

Hey, Dr. Trump says UV cures stuff.

REPORTER: How concerned are you about the measles outbreak? There was another fatality today

TRUMP: Well I think they, uh, they’re doing reports on it. It’s so far a fairly small number of people. It’s something people have known about for many many years. We’ll see what happens.

Considering that something like 1 in 500 or fewer folks who get measles die, “healing” 300 basically amounts to getting out of the way and letting nature do it’s thing. OR GET THE FUCKING VACCINE! That works too.

I put the ‘R’ in the MMR vaccine, and I’m scared that, like measles, rubella could make a comeback under RFK Jr.

“I’m sorry, but there is no defense for this poorly worded statement,” wrote Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, a prominent anti-vaccine activist who once claimed during a legislative hearing in Ohio that the COVID vaccine could cause patients to become magnetized, allowing them to stick “spoons and forks” all over their bodies.
Del Bigtree, a prominent anti-vaccine activist who supported Kennedy’s presidential run and recently co-founded a non-profit with him called MAHA Action, also questioned the health secretary’s endorsement. Bigtree suggested that Kennedy’s post had “got cut off.” He then went on to make unproven claims about vaccines and autism, and linked to a documentary he had made on the topic.

Tenpenney, Bigtree… More names I haven’t had to think about in a long time. The idiot doesn’t seem to realize that he cannot have it both ways! His own will crucify him if he starts sounding like us, at all. And the real facts will crucify him if he does not. Love to see it!

Texas measles outbreak includes multiple cases at a day care in Lubbock | Yourbasin

A day care facility in a Texas county that’s part of the measles outbreak has multiple cases, including children too young to be fully vaccinated, public health officials say.

It was bound to happen. Young babies with measles have a M&M rate considerably higher than older kids and adults. God, I hate this…
