So who do we elect this year?

Arizona went with Biden.

Now 138 million votes, with Biden’s lead widening to 3.2 million votes. At this rate, 158 million would bring his lead to 7.2 million votes. Since most of the outstanding votes are absentee ballots from blue states, a continuing blue shift seems likely, but the size is anyone’s guess.

it’s not official yet, though.

And the current POTUS is already suing PA, MI, and GA.

He doesn’t seem to include NV and NE, or GA.

Someone just reminded me of the scariest part of US presidential elections: it’s entirely possible that your votes won’t count.

State governments appoint electors. So far, only a slim veneer of respect for norms has meant that the electors represent the results of a state.

But there’s no hard and fast rule that demands it. There’s nothing to stop a Rebublican state government (hypothetically) from looking at how their state flipped blue and saying “fuck it” and appointing electors they know will cast their votes for Trump.

Perfectly legal. And it only used to be unthinkable.

Good god, I woke up and reached for Twitter and saw Trunps spiritual adviser claiming a spirit wind from Africa helped him win and I still haven’t stopped shaking.

Biden is on track for 52% of the popular vote… and probably a win in the electoral college, but no guarantee.

In Illinois, where I used to vote, you also vote for the electors, who are listed by party affiliation. In Indiana this time, we did not have that option. It appears to be up to individual states how they approach this aspect of the EC, as well.

Supposing the senate refuses to confirm an attorney general, would the Biden administration still be able to investigate the Trump administration’s crimes?

There’s still plenty of other attorneys in the DOJ.

I do know that in Michigan, Sen. Gary Peters and Rep. Andy Levin were re-elected from my district, the 9th. This pleases me greatly.

Fun opinion: I think Andy Levin resembles a young Eli Wallach, which amuses me.

Mr. Peters, however, looks like he’s a middle school vice-principal. Which isn’t a bad thing.

I posted this here a few days ago, but I might not have described it well enough. Anyway, there’s the legitimate possibility that two different slates of electors can be appointed for a state, and then it comes down to Congress to decide which is legitimate and what to do about it, at which point, neither the popular nor electoral votes matter.

At that point, it’s one vote per state, and the party that has more states can overrule both the electoral and popular vote. Listen to what this guy has to say:

That’s a step beyond electors being allowed to vote their conscience instead of what the popular vote chose (which is a reasonable safeguard against a populist demagogue or fascist getting the most popular votes). A big step. It allows things to go the opposite direction. That to me is even scarier than states appointing contrary electors. The fact that legally, both the popular and electoral votes could be nullified.

I think if that happens, and it’s a real possibility, things just won’t be the same afterward.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who was one of three Republican governors who said they did not vote for Trump, called out the president by name.

“There is no defense for the President’s comments tonight undermining our Democratic process,” Hogan wrote on Twitter. “America is counting the votes, and we must respect the results as we always have before. No election or person is more important than our Democracy.”

Seeing recent reports that he’s taken a much-more-comfortable (but still small) lead of 5,587 votes in PA.

It’s good news, but these margins are leaving far too much room for Trump to play misinformation games.

[Edit] Aaaand some outlets are starting to call it. With Arizona still waaaaay behind in reporting this still feels a bit premature, even though it seems like the likely result. Here’s hoping there’s no more last-minute switches.
