I’m not saying here that the solution would be something biological… but the discussion reminded me of this old article about dolphins shedding their skin every 2 hours.

(The article is not clear on the shedding process over that 2 hours. I assume it doesn’t occur all at once—which would go against its ability to always achieve high speeds at anytime—so the process is certain to be one that involves the uppermost dermal layer sloughing off gradually as new skin is grown underneath. “Ablative” Dolphins!

That’s interesting. I vaguely remember reading about dolphin (or shark?) skin having mechanical properties that reduce vortex production and thus friction. But having skin cells slough off that quickly is amazing. I’m glad people skin doesn’t shed quite that fast.
