There’s no theoretical limit to the speed of transmission to Mars, you just make the lasers bigger and bigger. At some point people of Earth will see it as a weapons proliferation problem and yes, satellite intermediaries will be needed most of the time. Latency is standard space scale difficulty. But yeah, colonizing Mars is dumb. The chemistry of non-Earth-biosphere places does that.

I don’t think they were claiming there’s a theoretical limit. I think they were claiming it’s stupid to imagine transmitting amounts of data we can’t even get on earth without cables, and then not factor in how the speed of light would limit things further.
