The word “rawdogging” has taken on a new meaning among Gen Z (and maybe older alphas?) in the last couple of years. They are using it to mean going without something. A specific usage I’ve seen a lot was “rawdogging a flight”, which means to not engage in anything like watching tv, a movie, or consuming any media, including reading a book, over the course of an airplane flight. In other words, you just sit there for 2, 4, 6 hours, however long the flight is, and see if you can do it.
I understand that to us olds, it means something completely different, but this is a legitimate current use of the word.
When I think of re-claiming a term, I think of now-positive terms like queer or bastard or nerd, or now-fitting terms like santorum or teabaggers (referring to Tea Party nuts)…something where the new usage is related to the old usage.
In this case, the new usage is so completely orthogonal to the original term that it’s jarring in a way that isn’t powerful or reclaiming or ironic…it’s just dumb. (To me, at least.)
The Wikipedia page says that he’s been criticized by S.N.A.P. for not taking action against abusers in a couple of instances, but sadly that’s probably also true of the majority of Cardinals. Ahead of the conclave they put together a report examining claims against a lot of the contenders and many cardinals are in that list.
At least this guy was appointed by Francis so he’s unlikely to be an arch-conservative.
