Stocking up a year or two of my multivitamin & calcium chews.
If there’s food disruptions and poor nutrition; these are even more important.
Bonus: Bulk buying is cheaper and I’m going to use them anyway.

Rather like an “internal brain drain.”
Genia Blaser, director of Hotline at Immigrant Defense Project, and Yasmine Farhang, director of Advocacy at Immigrant Defense Project, discuss President Donald Trump’s recent executive order to ramp up the deportation of undocumented immigrants and explain the rights that undocumented individuals have when interacting with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Weirdly when a English speaker says Hari Kondabolu what I hear is about what I would imagine a Harri Kuntapolku [municipality path] would sound like in English.
I’m at the awkward position where I need to either go to my doctor, which is a full day trip because he’s a state away (and I don’t drive), or find a new one in order to get my prescriptions refilled.
I love my old doc. He’s very much a tell-it-to-you-straight guy. He is not a “just exercise and lose weight” guy. He knows my bad habits and accepts that I’m not going to break them easily.
It’s a conundrum, because it takes years to find a good doctor like that. One who actually listens to you, and tries to help, even if you aren’t living a perfect ideal life.
But having to dedicate an entire day to an appointment and coordinate transport is so challenging. It was so nice when I could just walk down there on my lunch break.
I guess I owe it to him to at least go one last time and tell him that. Maybe he can give me a recommendation to someone local.
Excellent!
I always love finding a crossed wire inside human spoken language.
My first discovery as a child was learning “gift” (English) and “Gift” (German) were entirely different.
The world is still an interesting place.
Thank you for reminding me.
Maybe your current doc knows someone near you?
Most doctors I know do telehealth now. They’ll go through the MyChart or other medical software structure to maintain HIPAA. Any chance that’s an option with this doctor?
I remember going to a doctor in the early 2010s and the doctor wanted to know last cycle. Unfortunately, my phone died about two hours before my appt (I would use “CC payment” on Google), so I asked to see a calendar since my phone wasn’t working.
She suggested that I use a menstrual app, and I was like, “Why use an app for one monthly notation? Also, do you not understand that my phone is not working and I couldn’t access the app even if I had it?”
Exactly! Not be a doomsayer, but if there’s an extended power outage having analog experience is definitely necessary.
= knowing how to use a paper calendar
Yeah, I suppose that’s a skill that’s going the way of knowing how to count out change during a cash transaction.
Gaaah, what is happening out there!?
If you have any means to do so, I recommend getting your home heating/cooling appliances up to date as soon as you can, and if you don’t already have one, try to find a technician/maintenance specialist if your appliances require that.
Based on reports from colleagues in the industry, we’re anticipating a collapse of the residential climate control/comfort industry in the next couple years. Most specifically HVAC.
Venture capital firms have bought up all or most of the large “good” (competent and well-functioning) companies out there, and with the gutting of unions in the past 50 years, the workforce pipeline is insufficient to replace retirees. Skilled techs are being reassigned to staff call centers because there aren’t enough bodies to be out in the field, so they’re putting minimally-trained staff out there in people’s homes, with the call center supporting the field techs.
The VCs are going to do their thing, devour any value and yacht away from the rubble. If you live somewhere with dangerously high or low temps, start now to get yourself ready.
What do we do if we don’t have the means to do so?
First check with your local community action agency to see if there are any programs offering assistance that you’re eligible for.

Weatherization is a big one.
Next, identify local heating/cooling shelters in the area if you haven’t already. Make a list. Locally, this is mainly libraries, churches, and a couple other public buildings (schools sometimes in the winter, e.g.), all with different hours.
There’s also a lot you can do DIY to make your space easier to heat and cool, too much to detail here, but you probably already know the basics: air seal, insulate, that kind of thing. I’ll think on it and write again if I come up with anything more.
I’m almost to the point of using wattles like a hermit.
And now that I’m not only poor, I’ve reached my “seniority” at age 60 so I qualify for county assistance.
I’m ashamed to let anyone into my home because I don’t want to hear, “Why didn’t do this sooner?”, like I purposely haven’t done somewhat vital maintenance. (I used to not go to the dentist because of assistants saying, “Oh my, you don’t floss often, do often?” in a patronizing tone. Heck, I wish I could remodel the whole house! It’s silly, I know but just thinking about it activates my GAD.
I live in dread of my doctor retiring.
From a Bluesky account that’s locked to outside users (I figure if they don’t want logged-out viewers to see it then I probably shouldn’t quote their username):
The new “Don’t Just Do Nothing: 20 Things You Can Do to Counter Fascism—Yes, You! Yes, Now!” zine makes a great gift for your liberal fam, friends, neighbors & coworkers!

This was put together by a group of Jewish Anarchists. Much of the advice has been echoed in other places (find community, learn new skills, etc.) but it’s still good to hear. The PDF is formatted for printing (which makes it out of order on a reader app), but the text is also on the web page and that’s more easy to read.
